I was in my 20s when I sewed my first quilt. The fabrics were inappropriate, there wasn't a single straight line of stitching and the whole quilt puckered like it had been sucking on lemons for a week. I love that quilt and it still graces a couch in my daughter's bedroom. I smile every time I see it, but I am not what you would call a traditional quilter.
My daughter was about seven when she sewed her first quilt, under the watchful eye of her grandmother who
can sew straight lines. They are about to start on their next project – a floor cushion for our new puppy, so we are about to embark on the hunt for appropriately canine-themed fabric.
The timing then of the first-ever shop hop sponsored by the West Australian Quilters' Association is perfect, and it is open to WAQA members and non-members alike. Whether you are a keen quilter or just love a bargain, the shop-hop is a three day shopping adventure around Perth, celebrating Worldwide Quilting Day on March 18.
Fourteen shops around Perth are opening their doors as part of the Shop Hop and offering a range of prizes, demonstrations, discounts, goody-bags, freebies, raffles and tasty treats to everyone who visits as part of the Shop Hop.
To participate in the Shop Hop, which will take place between Thursday 16th and Saturday 18th of March, you will need a Passport which can be purchased after March 1st from Handcrafters House in Midland or Kraft Daze Sewing World in Maddington. You can also get a passport from the
Quilting as an Artform Exhibition on the 13th and 14th of March being held at Central Park Tower in the city (although the exhibition itself runs until the 24th of March).
Not only will your passport make you eligible for all the discounts, demonstrations and activities at the participating shops it will also be your ticket to a number of exclusive raffles. This is a self-guided shop-hop and you can visit the shops in any order over the three days. The more shops you visit and the more stamps your passport gets, the more raffles you are able to enter with great prizes like sewing machines, handmade quilts and gift vouchers.
So whether you are a seasoned quilter or just quilt-curious, this fun three-day shop hop is a great way to explore some of Perth's best quilting shops and grab some bargains in the process.
