Footscray and the surrounding suburbs are outgrowing their proverbial boots. We know this, because it has been reported on countless blogs.

Attached to the string of trendy cafes that have opened up in the past year in the area is West 48 . I moved house 18 months ago. Had W48 opened its doors prior, I would have already visited for sure (given than I was living a mere 10 minute walk away). So in light of a beautiful spring day on Saturday, I finally decided to go the distance (20 minute walk) and see what all the fuss was about.

What should have been a 20 minute walk, turned into a walk coupled with a dawdle as we stopped off at a garage sale along the way. We then made our way to the café with J transporting a newly acquired spirit level and a bag filled with second hand tools. At least we looked like we had important work to do!

When we arrive at the cafe, we are greeted by friendly staff and take a seat towards the back. It's a small venue, but the space is economically filled with furniture of various shapes and sizes. It's refreshing to relax in a hip, new café that isn't trying too hard. There are no pale green light shades or retro flip-top school desks. In fact, the first thing that caught my eye was the impressive display cabinet of sandwiches and tasty-looking treats.

So onto breakfast. First thing's first; coffee please! We order two long blacks. They arrive convincingly served in cute little orange cups. The coffee is good, but not getting that signature taste I'd been expecting.

We agree to walk onto Common Galaxia in Seddon for coffee #2 after breakfast to complete a connoisseur comparison taste-test. I'm getting hungry and decide to order the heirloom tomatoes, avocado and fetta on multigrain toast with a free-range egg. J ordered the ciabatta topped with hummus, dukkha and eggs.

Both dishes arrived on the table looking highly enticing.

We are also quite hungry after a delayed journey to our destination. J is happy and satisfied with his order. I enjoyed the combination of ingredients in my breakfast, however, the avocado and tomato are both a bit under ripe.

Trust me, I rarely eat tomato between March and November, unless it's from a can. Having overlooked the seasons I was excited at the prospect of fresh tomato. The fetta was extra special. Delightfully creamy and flavoursome. A true guilty pleasure for a vegetarian who checks for rennet in the list of ingredients when cheese shopping.

We will definitely return to W48. The range of food on the menu captured our interest and warrants future visits. You find comfort in a cafe run by genuine staff who welcome a chat with a newcomer. So even though I'm living a little further west these days, I feel at home in West 48.
