Are you yearning to escape the city for some fresh country air, but are unsure about where to go, and when? If so, how about heading to Northam on Saturday April 12th for the ? Celebrating the centenary of Wesfarmers, one of Australia's largest companies that started out as the Westralian Farmer's Co-operative, the concert will be totally free of charge, providing wonderful entertainment for the whole family.

The Westralian Farmer's Co-operative was founded on the 21st of June 1914, with the goal of providing services and merchandise to the Western Australian rural sector. Flourishing throughout the Wheatbelt, the state's agricultural heartland, as well as in other regional areas, by the 1940s its business concerns were diverse, ranging from wheat and general trade to livestock, wool, grain and fruit exports, and much more. Over the following decades, business continued to grow and in 1984 it was restructured from being a co-operative to a public company, changing its name to Wesfarmers Limited. A century after its inception, Wesfarmers is one of Australia's largest public companies and employs around 220 000 people worldwide.

Taking place on the Henry Street Oval at the Northam Recreation Centre, the will kick off at around 4.30pm with pre-show performances by local community groups, while from 7.00pm until 9.00pm Westfarmers' principal performing arts partners, the West Australian Symphony Orchestra and the West Australian Opera will provide an electrifying performance that is sure to keep the audience captivated and entranced. With classical masterpieces and time-honoured favourites presented by Western Australia's finest musicians and vocalists, this is an event that shouldn't be missed. For country people living far from the city, as well as city-slickers on a tight budget, the concert will be a rare opportunity to see these world-class performers free of charge.

Guests are encouraged to bring along their own food and beverages to the concert, although refreshments will also be available there. The gates open at 4.00pm, half an hour before the concert begins, and separate areas will be designated for audience sitting on blankets, low seats and high seats. This ensures that everyone gets a good view of all the action on the stage.

As the Wesfarmer's story began on the Wheatbelt a century ago, it's only fitting that the celebration of its centenary is also being held there. Northam is an easy one hour drive from Perth, so if you'd like to return to the city after the concert, it's quite doable. Alternatively, if you want to spend the night in Northam rather than drive back home, there is a terrific range of accommodation in town, from simple rooms in the local pubs to classic bed-and-breakfast accommodation in some of the lovely old homes. For more information about Northam, including where to stay and what else to do, take a look at the Shire of Northam and Avon Valley Tourism websites.

In conclusion, the is a very special one-off cultural event: one that you really can't afford to miss. In a day and age where very little is free of charge, Wesfarmers is providing the opportunity for the wider Western Australian community to come together and celebrate home-grown enterprise and the talents of some of our most gifted local performers.
