Snoozing Hippos
Werribee Open Range Zoo is a fantastic place to take your children to see animals up close and personal. All animal lovers will enjoy seeing the cute meerkats, big hippos, scary lions, tall giraffes and more in this scenic place.
There are lots of beautiful animals at Werribee Zoo but not as much as the Melbourne Zoo. You will see creatures such as lions, ostriches, bison, camels, giraffes, gorillas, kangaroos, koalas, rhinos, monkeys, and a few more.
One thing you must do at this zoo is book a safari bus ride through the gorgeous landscape to see the animals up close. It is very informative as the bus driver explains about each animal, you may even be lucky for the animal to come up close to the bus.
Minimum riding age is eight years old, so sadly younger kids cannot board the bus. The cost is $55 per person and the tour takes roughly 90 minutes, it is well worth the cost.

There are a few places to eat at the zoo if you feel like buying your lunch. Our favourite was the Meerkat Bistro, as you can watch the meerkats in their enclosures.
Hippo Beach Cafe is also very popular because outside is water fountains and sand for kid size to play in. The sprinklers are a godsend on hot days!
Overall, I enjoyed my experiences at the Werribee Zoo whenever I have gone. The whole family really loved it and it wasn't too overwhelming and easy to navigate around. The staff are very friendly and helpful too.
