Nestled amongst the gum trees, far enough from the freeways and busy roads lies Were Street. It is the main street in Montmorency, or Monty as the locals affectionately call it. Were Street stretches from the train station at the bottom of the hill, to the top, where the windmill stands proudly on the corner of Were Street and Rattray Road.

Though it feels like you could be in the country, not a mere 18kms from the city, Were St has a lively atmosphere with an eclectic mix of shops and cafes that are always cosy and inviting. It has a wonderful community vibe and is an artist's haven, with mosaic artwork spotted along the sidewalk and artists competitions running through-out the year. A large mural of native animals is positioned in the central walkway to the car park behind. The preferred mode of transport around here is walking and you can tell, as there are several walkways leading to Were St from the hilly neighbourhood beyond. There is something charmingly old-fashioned about Were Street, it's a reminder of days gone by, a time when life was less frantic.

You won't find any chain stores on Were Street, but rather unique local traders with a lot of soul. With an organic food store, fair trade gift shop, a deli, a post office, two butchers and three bakeries, it's just the candlestick maker missing. At the top of the hill, Max's Burger Bar is a gourmet burger lounge and soon to be next door a wine bar will be opening. Alfresco dining is a popular option at many of the quaint cafes that are often full to the brim, and there is no shortage of good coffee.

The view from the street extends out to a vista of gum trees; it's almost like being in Daylesford, but in the city. Were Street encapsulates that small village feeling, where the traders are warm and friendly. The street is host to a lot of local music events and festivals run by the Traders Association and local artist residents. It really is the hub of the community. Yes, there is something special about Were Street, something a bit quirky…
