Wentworth Falls Lookouts

When an attraction is so good a town gets named after it, you know it's something you want to see. And fortunately, the facilities at the Wentworth Falls lookouts make that very easy.

There are three lookouts near the car park that you can see on a quick visit to the area. Two offer grand views of the Jamison Valley, but the third allows you to see the waterfall itself.

The appropriately named Jamison Lookout is the first lookout to stop at and it's located right at the car park, along the footpath beside the loop of Sir H Burrell Drive. Such a location makes it particularly good for anyone in a wheelchair and there are two disabled parking spots nearby.



Further along the roadside footpath is the Wentworth Falls Lookout. You'd think this is the one that involves views of the falls, but it's actually not (and because you're reading this you won't be disappointed like other people were when I was there).





It's the last of the three lookouts here that you need to visit to see Wentworth Falls. This one is called Princes Rock Lookout and requires a bit more effort that the other two.

In the two pictures above, you can see pale rocks at the edge of the bush in the foreground. These make up the lookout, and you pretty much walk down stairs until you get to them, following a route that's been in use since the 1890s. The National Parks and Wildlife Service lists the distance as 0.8 kilometres.



One you're at this lookout, there's nothing between you and Wentworth Falls.





As well as these three lookouts there are various walks that start or pass through this spot, including ones that take you right over the top of the waterfall. Maps up by the road provide information on different routes and the times they take. Details can be found online here .

A day can be spent at Wentworth Falls even without doing the walks; the Wentworth Falls Picnic Area has a barbecue and tables just waiting to host a picnic. There are also toilets (which are very clean and modern).





If you haven't guessed already, this area attracts a lot of tourists and can get very busy. I visited at lunchtime on a weekday and the car park was packed.

If you want that somewhere more private, Gordon Falls in neighbouring Leura is a similarly short trek down some steps to views of a waterfall, though it is much less impressive. And of course, if you're doing the major attractions in the Blue Mountains, nothing beats the view of the Three Sisters at Echo Point in Katoomba, which is about ten minutes away.
