Buy your veges whilst overlooking the market gardens
Did you know that last century from the 1920s to the 1970s, the Redlands district to the southeast of Brisbane City, was known as the Salad Bowl? This is because this area, with its rich red soils, had lots of farms where people could buy fresh produce and flowers straight from the farm.
The tradition continues with the recent opening of The Farm at 625 Main Road, Wellington Point.
Those familiar with the area will be aware that a Farm Shed, selling fresh fruit and vegetables, had been in operation for many years. This has been replaced by The Farm, a modern, fresh looking market hall, specialising in the freshest Australian products. At the time of writing, garlic is the only exception due to a national shortfall.
Plans are afoot to include a cafe with an alfresco dining area overlooking the extensive vegetable gardens, though COVID-19 has temporarily placed this on hold. To this end, there is also a giant chemical-free kitchen garden growing abundantly dotted around the premises.
There are also plans to include a butcher in the market hall which will make this a one-stop point for fresh foods (coming soon I've been advised). You can also pick up fresh flowers if you're visiting in the area. Did I mention the locally grown strawberries?
Whether you are a resident of the Redlands or just driving through The Farm is well worth a visit. It's one of those "watch this space" places that will keep evolving. And can I just remind you about the strawberries ...
I drove past there the other day and thought to myself "I wonder which writer will be the first to write an article on this new business?" Good on you. The earth and gardens look so rich; I will definitely be popping in there soon.
