The first whales of the season will soon be making their presence felt in the warm Queensland waters of the 'whale super highway'. With humpback whale populations reportedly increasing at about 10% each year, from June through to November this year south-east Queensland can expect to see close to 30,000 of these giant cetaceans cruising by. And that makes a whole lot of people very happy. Moreton Bay is planning its very own Welcome to The Whales event on Sunday 27 May so, if whales make you happy, come along to join in all the fun.

This will be a night to remember under the stars, and it's FREE to attend. Come for the whales and stay for a huge range of musical entertainment on stage, an outdoor documentary and kids' movie, and food trucks. On the beach you'll find sand sculptures and beach fire pits. An ecological ocean zone will provide opportunities for ocean-based arts and crafts activities while a science festival organised by Australian Coastal & Marine Ecology and Advance Queensland will let kids learn about marine life through touch tanks and a 360° virtual reality Great Barrier Reef experience.

Entertainment includes:

• Peppermint Ollie, whose 'aggressive uke' style incorporates elements of pop and rock music.

• Ruby Gilbert, Brisbane-based alt country festival performer extraordinaire.

• Coastal folk guitarist, Liam Johnston and Band

Special highlight

At the Whale Wishes Ceremony, you'll be able to place a candle on the giant whale sand sculpture, hoping for safe passage for all the whales that will pass through Moreton Bay on their way to and from warmer waters this whale season. For the kids, there will also be a visit from Jamie the Mermaid, who is coming to welcome her friends, the whales, and to flash her shimmering blue and pink tail.
