Baking soda is one of those items that every household has stuffed in the back of the pantry, but no one seems to know how many amazing things it can do. Here are just a few of the wonderful things baking soda can do for you.

Face Cleanser/exfoliater: Baking soda is a great face cleaner for all skin types - just add a little bit of water to make a paste, gently massage into your face, and leave it on for five to ten minutes for a mask. It exfoliates all the dead skin away and when you wash it off your face will be as smooth as a baby's bottom.

Shampoo: Baking soda can be used as a hair cleanser. Mix three parts baking soda with one part water and apply to wet hair, focusing on the scalp. Rinse out and condition as usual.

If you don't want to go the whole hog just sprinkle some baking soda on top of your regular shampoo. It will work nearly the same, just make sure you rinse it out well.

Cleaning

Clean light oil and grease stains: Sprinke baking soda over a grease or oil stain in your driveway or garage and scrubbing with a wet cloth to remove the stain.

Bathroom and shower: Cover your bath or shower tiles with a sprinkle of baking soda then spray water with lemon juice added. The baking soda and water will fizz away any soap scum you could have, and you're not inhaling harsh chemicals.

Deodorize carpets: This one is super simple, just sprinkle baking soda on your carpet and leave overnight (the longer you leave it the better it will work), then just vacuum away. Fresh carpets have never been easier. This is definitely not suitable for wool carpets - be sure to check first.

Medical

Relieve itchy insect bites: Mix baking soda and water until it is a paste and rub on any bites that are irritating you.

Heartburn relief: Drink a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water.

Soothe sunburn and windburn: Apply three parts baking soda and one part water paste onto any areas burned.

Or add one cup of baking soda to your bath. It will also leave the rest of your skin feeling smoother and softer - added bonus!

Jasmin, Please be aware that using baking soda on wool carpets will cause a reaction that burns the fibres causing irreparable damage to the fibres. The end result may be a orange/brown discolouration. I am a Woolsafe Australia Inspector and through my work I am called out by clients who have used baking soda (bi carb) as a paste on their expensive wool carpet for stain removal only to find they are left with damaged fibres, replacement or patching the only option to fix the problem. If the carpets smell it is because of the build up of bacteria, soils and oils and it is time to have them professional cleaned adding baking soda will only make it more prone to soiling and growth of bacteria.
