Hong Kong is known for many things- a busy lifestyle, kung-fu films, towering buildings, and an enviable skyline. The city is, you could say, one of the most urban of urban places. But if you're a local or tourist in desperate need of a break from all that noise and traffic, or just want to experience something different then a visit to Tai O may be just the thing for you to relax and unwind.

This quaint little fishing town is home to many photogenic moments. From stalls where you can see the townsfolk prepare and sell traditional foods like shrimp paste and salted egg yolks, to the myriad stray cats sunning themselves and looking for opportunities to get a pat and a snack, it is a great place to take pictures of all the sights around you.

If you're feeling hungry there are myriad seafood restaurants and even a few Western cafes, as well as vendors selling local street snacks and desserts. Try the grilled dried squid or fish roe if you are after something savoury, or the doufu fa (tofu pudding) if you want to indulge your sweet tooth.

Speedboat cruises taking visitors to see the native pink dolphins also operate here and are very inexpensive at HK$20. I was lucky to see both an adult and a baby dolphin on one of my visits here with family.

For those looking for something to get as a gift or keepsake, there are small shops and vendors that sell a variety of things from the aforementioned traditional foods, to herbal tea and handicrafts to take home.
