The weekend of 16th July 2022 will be full of activities on Coochiemudlo Island.

Leading up the weekend is a Photographic Competition
with 3 categories and great prizes.

The adult winner in each category will win an accommodation prize of between 2-4 days in an Airbnb on Coochie. The best runner-up, as chosen by the judges, will be awarded a voucher worth $199 for a Sparkle Clean service on their camera equipment donated by Anderson's Camera Repair shop in Capalaba.

The categories are:
1) Coochiemudlo's Mangroves - Images that feature mangrove species on the island.

2) Island Life - Images of persons, artefacts or places related to Coochiemudlo island.

3) Coochiemudlo Nature - Images of indigenous animals, flora, or natural phenomena or places, captured on Coochiemudlo Island.

Junior photographers Under 17 are also invited to submit entries for the same three categories. Junior Winners in each category will be awarded a $100 Officeworks voucher.

Saturday is The Mangrove Festival. I went last year and saw most of it before it was closed early due to Covid restrictions. It was very well run and I can't wait to go again.

MANGROVE FESTIVAL

Mangrove Walks
There are 2 walks in our mangrove forest which take about an hour. This year the route maps are on mobile-friendly web pages with photos, text, and audio clips.

Mangroves Afloat
On the midday tide, our two pontoon boats will take visitors around the western edge of the island's mangrove forest.

The boats leave at 11am, 12 midday, and 1pm on both Saturday and Sunday. There are twenty seats for each sailing, so book as soon as possible.

Mangrove Art

Two galleries will be open all day, plus an artisan's market at the excellent Curlew Cafe on Main Beach as well as an exhibition featuring the Coochiemudlo herbarium created from island flora collected years ago by local bush carers.

Mangrove Music**

Barbara Jeffrey and José Garcia are 'Tidal Moon' - whose music has been described as "acoustic ripples upon a sea of imagination".

Also in attendance will be the Redland City Ukes. Expect great harmonies, pro vocals and the urge to singalong.

Mangrove Champions

Citizen scientists of Coastcare, based on the Southern Moreton Bay Islands, closely monitor mangrove health in the bay. They'll be bringing their drone to the festival to show how technology makes data collection easier and results more accurate.

Dr. Norm Duke and local marine experts will share their expertise, answer questions and show the use of drones to collect data more accurately.

Quandamooka woman Elisha Kissick is coming over from Minjerribah to tell and show stories of indigenous food gathering and cuisine throughout the day.

Mangrove Photography

The Heritage Society, with the Redlands Camera Club, will exhibit the entries from the photo competition and make presentations on the day.
