The High Country region is the go-to-place for many roadtrippers, especially in the autumn months. The streets are lined with golden foliage so it often attracts people ranging from photographers to nature lovers.

However, it is fun to visit around other times of the year too, so take note of these activities next time you're there:

Stay at The Sharefarmer's Cottage
Airbnb often provides some cosy options for accommodation and this location was no exception. Located on a farm property just off the Great Alpine Road, this cottage is separate from the main house.

The bathroom and kitchen are clean and modern and there's ample space for dining in addition to three bedrooms. The best part is waking up to the green views in the morning - misty for us as we visited closer to winter.

We didn't get to meet the owners but if you do get the chance to meet them, they can introduce you to the alpacas!

Feed the animals at Red Stag Deer and Emu Farm
If you love cute animals, this is the place for you. It's also great for kids and for a small price.

Pay $5 for a bucket of feed and feed the deers, sheep, pigs and even a water buffalo. They also had a young deer roaming the outdoor cafe area. It was going through some sort of teething or "eat everything" phase as it kept chomping on my friend's shirt, highly entertaining!

The venue also has an amazing view, so we stayed a while longer for dessert. If you're after a substantial meal, they also have a full dine-in menu.

Try grape stomping at the Rutherglen Country Fair
Visit around the right time of the year and your trip might coincide with the region's Winery Walkabout. Next year it will take place on 9 and 10 June. You buy a ticket to visit multiple wineries over the weekend - there is also entertainment, food, masterclasses and more.

My friends and I are not big wine drinkers but we discovered there was a country fair on the Sunday in Rutherglen. This included a grape stomping competition. Not knowing what this really entailed, my friend and I entered.

Turns out there's more to it than just stomping. The squashed grapes clog up the hole where your grape juice is supposed to filter out, so one person has to keep clearing it, as you're measured on how much juice you produce! Now we know the tricks, let's see if we do better next year! You'll have to keep an eye out for dates and email the committee to enter.

Walk the Canyon Walk

There is an iconic and easy walk called the Canyon Walk, accessible from the town centre. It's lovely to take a dog for a walk or to just enjoy the sunshine reflecting off the water. It took a bit over an hour at a leisurely pace with some stops along the way to sit back and relax, so nothing strenuous.

Ride the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail
The High Country region is well-known for its Rail Trail, stretching 44 km from Wodonga to Old Tallangatta, passing lakes, farmland and country towns.

For our last day we hired bikes for half the day from Cycle Path and just chose a section of the trail to ride. The path is easy to follow as it is separate from the car roads.

From Bright, we rode to Wandiligong and enjoyed some mountainous views, then back past Bright and onto Porepunkah for a coffee. After some break time at Porepunkah, we rode back to Bright to return the bikes to prepare for our trek home.

Drink coffee at the Rail Trail Cafe

When we stopped in Porepunkah, the Rail Trail Cafe caught our eye as it was surrounded by trees with autumn leaves. Not as easy to catch in June as winter seeps in. The cafe, and many other places in High Country, also had ample space for bike parking so we decided we deserved a well-earned break.

Eat burgers at Burgerville[/LINK]
Finally, just to counteract all the exercise we did that weekend, we went to get a good feed of burgers before the roadtrip back to Melburne. Burgerville was next to Woolworths, so we passed it all the time when we went for grocery shopping.

We had a range of different burgers from venison to chicken - they were simple and delicious, which is what we needed. The chips were super addictive too. See their menu here .

As you can see, there's plenty to do in High Country, but I already think I need a few more trips to continue exploring. We didn't even get to visit Mount Buffalo National Park this round for some hikes.
