The Mediterranean Diet is supposed to be one of the healthiest ways of eating, it embraces fresh foods & vegetables, healthy oils, and of course plenty of garlic. While you could just head out to one of Adelaide's many Greek restaurants, why not learn how to make some fresh and tasty Greek food at home. WEA offers you a head start with their Traditional Greek Cuisine cooking course.

The course is taught by Dora Koutrokois, with help from her husband Jim. Dora doesn't come to the course as a professional chef, but as someone who has been cooking and sharing Greek cuisine for her entire life. Thanks to this Dora has a great knowledge of cooking, and brings with her tasty recipes, tips and tricks, and a very friendly manner. You'll feel more like you're cooking with your mum, rather than a teacher.

Traditional Greek Cuisine is a four week course, and you'll be cooking for three of those weeks. On the first night you will usually come along with an empty head and empty stomach, and leave very satisfied and prepared for your next class. You can take advantage of the first class to see Dora prepare some of the meals, which of course you can taste afterwards.

If there are any other Greek meals that you'd like to try, the first class is the best time to bring them up. While there are set recipes throughout the course, if you've got something you're dying to make, chances are you can bring along the ingredients and make it anyway. It is such a flexible class, which means you can get the most of Dora's extensive knowledge.

In the next three weeks you'll cook. The course is designed so that you bring along all your own ingredients, and you'll get tips for buying the freshest and most suitable ingredients. During your four weeks Gaganis Bros will become your best friend, and you'll learn what eggplant to pick, and discover a range of new pastries. While the course focusses on the selected recipes, you'll also pick up a range of new skills that will help you as you open up to Greek cooking.

Traditional Greek Cuisine joins a range of other cooking courses by WEA. It is a great chance to socialise, whether you come along with a group of friends, or alone. You'll get the chance to meet a range of new people from mums, dads, workmates, couples, and aspiring home chefs. There is a friendly vibe, and everyone seems willing to chat to a stranger, or lend you some sugar when you're in need. If you're looking for a way to meet new people, that is also going to benefit you in the long run, then these courses are a great idea.

To make your night run smoothly bring along a bottle of wine, and share the cooking with a friend. It'll give you more time to relax, instead of just rushing around trying to get it all finished in time.

Traditional Greek Cuisine runs throughout the year, and you're best getting a copy of the WEA Course Guide to find out when the next course is available. It will set you back $94, or $79 if you're a concession, but this doesn't cover the cost of ingredients.
