Who are WAZouk, you may well ask!

WAZouk is a group of dancers, who do not belong to any dance schools and encourage and stage regular events in the dance field, and mainly in Latin and Brazilian styles including zouk. They also occasionally do tango and West Coast swing events.

So, what is Zouk, you may well ask!

Zouk is both a dance and a type of music and it is danced with a partner. Originating in Brazil, it is sometimes known as zouk-lambada. The dance is actually a form of lambada, which is the music and dance style that was very popular worldwide in the late 80's.

Zouk is a fun, modern dance suitable for all ages. For those who have already done other traditional Latin dances, many of the move, and techniques from those dances can be used in Zouk, making it fairly easy to adapt to this dance. Zouk can also be danced to a variety of music and moods, making it quite a versatile dance to know.

For a very detailed explanation of these dances, you can go to this website.

Now to the event!

The event will be held on Sunday, 18th February 2018 at "The Sandpit" at Scarborough Beach Amphitheatre.

Just to give you some idea of the fun and the event, the following is a video clip taken from an event last year:

The programme for this dance is:

From 3.00 pm to 4.00 pm, there will be free introductory Zumba lesson with Kylie and Suzie.

From 4.00 pm to 5.00 pm, there will be free introduction lessons of Kozomba by JRDA.

From 5.00 pm to 8.30 pm, DJ Momo will play a mixture of Latin and Brazilian music for Zouk Kizomba, Salsa and Bachata, plus a bit of Samba. Cost for this one is just $5.00.

There ARE some things you need to know before attending this event and some of these are as follows:

  • You will need to get a wristband before you go on to the sand floor.

  • Dancing is on concrete which will have a light covering of sand, and it is recommended that you wear old sneakers or any shoes that have a rubber sole. Best to save the proper dance shoes (with leather/suede soles) for a wooden or similar floor!

  • You will need to bring a jacket as it can get cool after the sun sets at Scarborough.

  • There will be NO ALCOHOL at this event – Scarborough beach is an alcohol-free zone and is this is strictly monitored regularly by police and rangers.

  • There are a few bars and several licensed restaurants within about 200 metres of the amphitheatre, so you can have food there, or there will be refreshments for sale at the DJ console. You will be able to buy bottled water and soft drinks for $2 and coconut water is $3.

  • By buying these drinks, you will also be supporting the event.

The main summer event has been running at Scarborough Beach Amphitheatre since February 2013 and the Sandpit events run mostly on Sunday afternoons, from October till June every year, so make sure you check out the WAZouk Facebook page to find out more events.
