Now that the new year has come, and you may be thinking of trying new hobbies and interests, why not try and find your creative talent? Before you completely turn your back on the very idea, just remember that creative talent is found in so many forms, you just need to find the right one for you. Just because you didn't succeed at mastering the piano aged 12, doesn't mean that musical ability is lost on you, and just because your grades in art subjects at school were less-than-average, doesn't mean that you have to steer clear of being creative ever again!

1. Start Cooking

Creativity encompassed many entities, and one of the best ones you can start with, is cooking. This can be incredibly exciting, hit the internet (BBC Good Food is an Aladdin's cave full of recipes) and find something out-of-the ordinary. Cooking also takes practice, so once you have dishes perfected, you can experiment and add your own twists to them to create something different.

2. Make a Collage

Collage making is something you would normally associate with children, but for adults, it can be something of an art-form. Dig out old magazines, find a cheap canvas or sturdy cardboard, and start by creating a background, this should cover the entire board and leave no gaps in between. Then, find images you consider striking or interesting, and position and layer them any way you want. The possibilities and themes are endless. You can even use your own personal photos.

3. Take Music Lessons

Try a music lesson or two. You do not have to buy an instrument until you are dead set on learning, just go for a taster session and see what you think. If the standard trumpet, piano or flute lessons don't appeal, think outside the box: oboe, mandolin and banjo can be a fun alternative. If instruments do not suit you, percussion is easy to teach yourself, if you have a sense of rhythm, and if you want to try singing, join a choir and enjoy creating something beautiful as a group.

4. Get Behind the Bar

Learning how to make cocktails can be easy and doesn't always require you to use special equipment. Again, recipe websites are a goldmine for quirky cocktail recipes.

5. Dig Around in the Garden

Gardening is good exercise, as well as being a very fulfilling and rewarding hobby. Dig up a vegetable or flower patch, or if you live in a city, get an allotment. Start small, plant a few tulip or pansy bulbs and attempt a patch of carrots, work your way up as your horticultural knowledge increases and your garden grows.

So experiment, and eventually, you will find something that is bound to suit you. Persevere, and never stop trying new things.
