As Valentine's Day draws closer, love is in the air. Valentine's Day is the perfect opportunity to show your other half that you love and cherish them. While you don't necessarily need to buy into the excessive expense of the day to convey your affection, as retailers would have us believe, it's a great time to express how you feel. Therefore, here are seven ideas to inspire you and delight your partner. Remember, you can change and alter these suggestions to suit your tastes and budget. Make your special day meaningful to you and your loved one.

1). Make them a larger than life Valentine's Day card

Purchase a piece of cardboard in your special someone's favourite colour. Fold it in half and decorate it with pictures, photos, pieces of coloured paper, ribbon, sparkles, coloured pens, etc. Remember to write a thoughtful, heart-felt message inside. To make it even more memorable you could come up with a theme that means something to both of you or create a collage of photos of the two of you. If you are really artistic, you could even try making a giant pop-up card. Get creative and show how much you care without spending a fortune. This is one card that won't be going in the recycling bin.

2). Take your partner to their favourite candy store or chocolate shop

Once you are there allow them to make a selection of their favourite sweets and have a box specially made up for them on the spot. Then take them to a romantic place that means something to both of you, such as a secluded spot in a park, on or near the water, etc. You could blindfold them while you lead them there for that extra element of surprise. Relax together on a blanket and hand feed them their favourite sweets. While you are there, tell them exactly what makes them so special to you.

3). Prepare your loved one a special lunch

Why not spread the love throughout the day even if you can't be with them due to work or other commitments? Either prepare and pack them a gourmet feast or call up their favourite deli and have a special lunch delivered to their workplace. Fill their lunchbox with a combination of their favourite treats as well as some aphrodisiac foods to get them in a romantic mood. You could also fill their lunch container with heart-shaped confetti and chocolates as well as a sweet, loving note.

4). Win them over with wine

Buy a bottle of their favourite wine or liqueur and change the label. On your personal computing device and editing program of choice, create a new label with a special or quirky name and a romantic picture of the two of you. Change the wine's description to a few lines telling your sweetheart why you love them. Print the label out and replace the actual label. Serve this with their favourite meal or chocolates. If you want a more professional look you could even take your ideas to a printing shop and have them create and design it for you.

5). Let the flowers do the talking

Order a large quantity of red roses or their favourite flowers. Scatter them around the bedroom and on the bed so that your special someone wakes up to the beautiful sight and smell of fresh flowers surrounding them. Alternatively, you could arrange the flowers for when they get home or go to bed in the evening. Choose whatever works best for your lifestyle. You could have one flower in a different colour with a special note, photo or small present attached. Tell your loved one the three things you love most about them when you present their special flower to them.

6). Caricature's say I care

If your partner has a good sense of humour you could take a photo of the two of you and have a large caricature made depicting the pair of you in a funny situation. For example, your partner could be the King or Queen of Hearts and you could be the Joker. Or you could both be trapped in a heart shaped bubble. If there is a running joke you both have or a funny situation you were both in, you could have the caricature illustrate this. If you are artistic or know someone who can draw, try making this yourself. Hang the picture in the bedroom and see if they notice it when they wake up or go to bed.

7). Breakfast in bed

Bake your special someone fresh croissants and prepare some freshly squeezed orange juice or fresh fruit for breakfast. Alternatively, if they have a favourite breakfast, make that instead. Wear a cute delivery person, waitperson or French maid outfit and either go over to their place early to "deliver" them their special breakfast or serve it to them in bed. Have a "newspaper" accompany the meal headlining your love for them. Write a short article about why you love them. Type and print it out so it looks like a newspaper. If you find it hard to express your feelings on paper, try copying a love poem from another text.

These are just seven ideas to help you express your love in fun and creative ways. The important thing is to take these concepts and make them your own. Whatever you decide to do or purchase is a reflection of how you feel about your other half. Remember to think about what they like and what will make them feel special. You don't have to spend a million dollars to make them feel like a million dollars. That's the beauty of love, its effects are exponential. Alright, I might be sounding a little mushy but come on; it's Valentine's Day after all.
