Wayne Quilliam is one of Australia's most prolific Indigenous artists. This July, he will bring 16 large-scale digital art to Darling Quarter in a 24 hour public art exhibition titled Instaculture curated by aMBUSH Gallery for NAIDOC week (1 July – 7 July).

Wayne captures the six seasons of Aboriginal culture, Earth, sky, fresh water and salt water. The large scale scapes were captured on digital camera and from the air by drone.

The installation comprises 16 large-scale digital artworks (each 2.4m x 2.4m) displayed on four large cubes in the outdoor public exhibition space. The exhibition will be open 24 hours a day outside in the Darling Quarter.

Wayne's roots began in Freshwater, Tasmania. He first discovered his love of photography as a teenager, then it grew while he travelled the world working in the Navy. His trips to many countries exposed him to different cultures and he embraced discovering the local culture and traditions.

Back in Australia, he began to travel extensively throughout the country, collecting the images, words and stories from the elders of his own culture. The imagery Wayne has chosen for this exhibition highlight the exquisite textures and colours found in nature as well as the six seasons of the Aboriginal culture using images and traditional words or phrases.

Wayne calls his work 'traditional digital art' – traditional Aboriginal storytelling merged with modern technology. Across all corners of this land, he has found a deep connection to country and sees his unique art form as a way to alter the preconceived Western notions of Aboriginal art.

As Wayne explains, "We all interact and flow through the connection to country and this exhibition represents the feeling of collaboration. My art reflects a modern thriving culture not defined by a singular creation or iteration, but suggests a shifting focus, endeavouring to change ways of seeing and thinking, and reflecting the co-existence of nature and culture as a collaborative and evolving entity."

The exhibition encourages families to attend and enjoy a series of free family-friendly workshops. The workshops run from Monday 8 to Thursday 11 July in the foyer of the Monkey Baa Theatre , hosted in partnership with the local Koomurri Aboriginal Incursions.

Highlights:

Didgeridoo Show – traditional and contemporary solo didgeridoo performance. One performer in full traditional costume, performing traditional and contemporary didgeridoo sounds and rhythms.

Face Painting – An Indigenous tutor will have traditional ochre paint from which they will paint the children's faces (optional).
