Brand new to the coffee scene in Maroochydore is Wax Buildup - a funky speciality coffee and record store, located on busy Aerodrome Road. Yep, you heard me correctly - a record … or vinyl outlet! Mark Grounds, the Sunshine Coast-based record collector and Record Fair organiser and his award-winning barista wife, Cara Madden are the stroke of genius couple, who have recently opened this fabulously, laid-back community location.
Together, Mark and Cara's aim is to not only serve great coffee and pastries, within an ambience of an eclectic mix of both new and vintage vinyl, but to provide the local music scene with a place that artists and musicians can get together, grow and feel supported. Wax Buildup's main objective is 'inclusion' - to give the community a welcoming location to enjoy music and art or just to hang out.
I, of course, displayed my 'ignorance is bliss' persona, by enquiring as to how Mark and Cara came up with the very unusual name, Wax Buildup. Their explanation is quite ingenious. 'Wax', according to Mark, is a slang term for record/vinyl and 'build up' refers to his collection of records - literally the thousands of records that he has diligently and lovingly collected over the years. Neat, huh!
Mark has quite the note-worthy music scene background, having joined his first band in 1991, recorded an album and performed at various gigs in and around Brisbane. When Mark wasn't touring nationally, he would supplement his income by selling second-hand records at The Valley Markets or working casually at Skinny's Records in Brisbane.
Since moving to the Sunshine Coast, Mark has held record fairs and also started a business with the team at Sonic Sherpa, running on-site pop-up record shops at many festivals across Australia, which include Splendour in the Grass; Bluesfest and Falls Festival. If you're a music festival lover, you might even have met Mark at one of these festivals.
Cara and Mark's romance began in 2000 when Cara very happily introduced Mark to her world of coffee. Cara had been head Barista and cafe manager at successful coffee shops all around the world for more than two decades. Cara has been involved with numerous coffee spots and is currently working alongside the multi-award winning team at Tim Adams speciality coffee.
Wax Buildup - Records & Speciality Coffee - is the new chapter in Mark and Cara's life - the sharing of two individual passions. They have found their ideal venue in Maroochydore, kitted it out with quirkiness, colour and of course, records! Heaps and heaps of records that Mark has built up over the years and kept under lock and key in his secret 'vault' and always deemed too good to sell. Even the lampshades have been created out of 'old' vinyl - an unusual touch to the welcoming, colourful decor.

Well folks, the doors are now open … Mark is sharing his veritable treasure trove of vinyl with you! Whether you're browsing, looking to trade a vinyl or two, or want to enjoy an excellent cup of coffee with a slice of something delectable to eat …. Cara's other passion - baking decadently delicious sweet tooth must-haves, Wax Buildup is a relaxed, affable, foot-tapping location to take in some excellent yesteryear vinyl memorabilia. Mark and Cara are friendly, super efficient and love nothing more than sharing their passions with visitors.
