The Wave Rock Weekender is part music festival, part experience and part ecological venture. Every year towards the end of September, up to 800 festival goers under the stars at Hyden, about four hours east of Perth on the edge of the desert. The eerie beauty of Wave Rock is just around the corner, and when the music is on, also acts as a wonderful natural amplifier.

The festival is very eco-conscious. Festival goers are encouraged to use the same plastic cup throughout the weekend [it's hard, but it IS possible], and food trays are made from biodegradable items, such as potato starch. In return, festival goers are given the opportunity to explore the surrounds, not only of Wave Rock but also of the natural salt lake across the road, and to cool off, they can jump into the artificial salt pool at the end of the road.

The music is eclectic and a lot of the artists perform for free, or for a reduced fare. The lineup is usually a mixture of both local and national artists, and some artists who have played include Tame Impala, Abbie May, CW Stoneking and The Drones. The Wave Rock Weekender is so relaxed that you may find yourself having a picnic with some of the performers.
