Enjoy a beautiful day out at Watsons Bay.

Get there by car, bus from Town Hall 380 or ferry. Parking is difficult to find at The Gap area but Macquaire Lighthouse and Signal Hill areas are easy for parking.

Macquarie Lighthouse built by famous convict Francis Greenway and opened in 1818 follow the path behind and witness some magnificent views from the Lighthouse down to South Head.

Head to Signal Hill to view WW2 gun emplacements and shelters that are scattered along the coast line - these were used during the Japanese submarine era.

Further down learn about the Dunbar in 1857 during the Gold era, the Dunbar believed it was entering Sydney Harbour and crashed into the rocks along this jagged coastline.

An anchor has been placed as a memorial along this walk closer to The Gap end. 121 people lost their lives and 1 sole survivor.

Follow the Cliff Walk to various lookouts and glorious views of the coastline. Children will enjoy clambering over rocks and trying to find remnants of the Aboriginals who referred to this area as Kutti. There are some sandstone rocks near Signal Hill that still show some evidence of the Aboriginals - spear marks in the rocks where they sharpened them. However a lot have been eroded by weather.

Further down is Jacobs Ladder, a very pretty lookout which is actually an extinct volcanic dike. Follow through to The Famous Gap, which unfortunately is where many deaths have occurred and Life Line have now put in phones and CCVT cameras for people in need.

Finish at the Gap, have some lunch along the waterside, Watsons Bay Hotel, Doyles and Cafes line the area along with a beautiful large open park for the kids.

You can walk the beach and round to South Head or explore further along the cliff lines. There is also Dunbar House and beautiful churches to adore. An extremely pretty, historical area, please note when visiting these areas to look but don't touch as we want to preserve our history and respect it for future years.

You can access one Gunnery that I am aware of at Signal Hill but torch and enclosed shoes are advised. Please beware that these sheds have been used by the Public and have been damaged by misuse.

Watsons Bay can be a wonderfully cheap day out if you bring your own food or can be a relaxing day along the cafe, restaurant areas. Plenty for everyone.

Essentials to bring - water, camera, binoculars and walking shoes - you will fall in love with Watsons Bay and its history and heritage.
