Just 12 kilometres from Adelaide's city centre is Waterfall Gully and Mt Lofty. This location is a mecca for the walker, hiker and visitor to Adelaide and is a perfect autumn day out as the leaves on the trees are glorious and the climate suits a good challenging walk to the summit.

Nestled in the Adelaide foothills, the Waterfall Gully and Mt Lofty walks are fantastic on these autumn days. The walk up to the Mt Lofty look-out is a good fitness challenge, but if you take it easy and pace yourself the hike should be attainable to everyone with good general fitness. For those less fit it's worth visiting the site to take the Discovery Walk to the waterfalls which takes about 15 minutes and gives you an insight into the more challenging hikes ahead.

The start of the walks has good ramps providing wheelchair access to views of the waterfall and to the Utopia Cafe.

There are five hikes in total taking different routes. They are between 5.5 - 8.5 kilometres long and will take you anything between 2 - 2.5 hours return. If you do make it to the Mt Lofty look-out the views of Adelaide and the coastline beyond are fantastic and well worth the effort.

The area is part of the Cleland National Park, which in turn conserves vital areas of bushland in the Adelaide Hills Face Zone including the internationally popular Cleland Wildlife Park, the viewing platform of Mt Lofty Summit and the scenic Waterfall Gully.

The park is open all year around and everyday until 9pm.

For more detailed information you can buy a Cleland Conservation Park Bushwalking Map from the Cleland Wildlife Park or from the Mt Lofty Summit Visitor Information Centre. A brochure of the park and the walks is available from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) information line 82041910 or from [email protected] or Level 1, 100 Pirie Street, Adelaide.

The park has quite a lot of parking at the base of the walk and close to the Utopia Cafe. The car park can become very full on weekends and holidays so you may need to park in the road leading to the park and walk up.

Public toilets are available at the start of the walk and Utopia Cafe also provides breakfasts, lunches and coffee and tea for the weary walker or those just visiting the waterfalls.

Autumn is not a time to stop hiking or walking. This is a site for those who enjoy a challenging walk or want to see some beautiful natural environments very close to the city. Join many Adelaidians and visitors and keep fit and healthy over the cooler months of the year.
