The City of Onkaparinga has a huge sustainability program to conserve nature, reduce waste and motivate residents to contribute through workshops and eco friendly events, so when I came across the Waste Nott Recycling Store in Hackham, it was not a surprise. However, City of Onkaparinga has gone one step further than other councils in not only reducing waste and having open resources to do so for its residents, but it has also found a way in which common landfill waste can be sold, used and turned into cool crafts: welcome to the !

This cool little store is located on 268 Beach Road, Hackham West, and believe me, it is not just a recycling store, but a universe of ideas and creativity put to the test.

How does it work?
The , acquires goods that would otherwise go to landfill, but these are not your regular objects - you'll find corks, bubble wrap, Styrofoam trays, textile cardboard tubes, tiny electronic pieces, textile cuts and odd ends, cable ties, jars and containers, rubber bands, bottle caps (plastic and metal), film containers and more amongst many other bits and pieces.

Why would you buy this stuff?
The aim of this store is to provide teachers, crafts people, play groups and aged care activity programs with materials that are in perfectly usable condition to get creative and make crafts at very affordable prices, as well as give these object a new life by using our imagination and being more practical.

Next time you need something, visit instead of buying brand new stationeries, save money, the planet and immerse yourself in the creative process!

How much does it cost?
It is very cheap and very simple to shop here. There is a volunteer at the shop, you can ask them for a small bag $1,a medium bag $2 or a large bag $3, they hand you a bag and you fill it with whatever you please and however much you can fit in the bag.

This is practically rubbish/waste, what can you make with it?
Your options will only be limited to your imagination, but what sets this store apart from other recycling shops is the ideas! All over the walls you will find endless creations, including puppets, mail boxes, storage containers, kids toys, cards, musical instruments (the Japanese style drum is particularly cool) and other decorative objects, so whether you are creative or not, you will find something to craft from scratch.

How can I participate a bit more in this initiative?
If you are enthusiastic about recycling, have a friendly approach and have an inner inventor/ crafts person in you, then you can also volunteer at the .

Volunteers play an important role here by greeting customers, developing ideas and creating objects, giving advice on materials and keeping all the bits and bobs organised in the shop (I was slightly afraid this would be a junk store, but everything is so neatly organised here, it feels like a store, everything has a place and a space, making it a relaxing place to shop).
