For 81 years, the sidewalks of University Place, from East 12th Street into Washington Square East have been literally turned into an outdoor art gallery. Art exhibitors apply for and are granted space in the area, that runs along the outside of Washington Square Park into New York University's Schwartz Plaza on Bobkin Lane.

The 2011 Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit will be held on Memorial Day Weekend (May 28, 29, and 30). In addition, it will continue the following weekend (June 4 and 5).

From noon to 6:00 PM on all those days, you can enjoy the many different art pieces that are on display. Some of the pieces are for sale, so if you see something that catches your eye, you might be able to make it yours. And, you never know, you may wind up owning an original piece of the next Van Gogh (hopefully he or she will keep both ears intact) or Picasso or other famous artists.
