Everybody loves Show-time. For kids, the colour, flamboyance and frenetic pace are intoxicating, while adults invariably enjoy the old-fashioned carnival atmosphere and the opportunity to revisit happy childhood memories of fairy-floss, showbags and crazy amusement rides. They're the ultimate city-meets-country experiences, where people of all ages and backgrounds mingle, offering homage to Australia's proud agricultural heritage.

A refreshing alternative to the noise, chaos and excessive cost of big city events, country shows are currently undergoing a massive resurgence in popularity. Smaller and more intimate than their urban cousins, they're closer in spirit to the original ethos of agricultural shows, with their primary focus being on rural enterprise as opposed to the glitzy side-show phantasmagoria. At these events, local farmers proudly display their prized livestock and produce, immaculately-dressed children compete against each other in show-jumping competitions and housewives vie against each other in various cookery and craft competitions. They're nostalgic time-capsules of Australian country life that never seem to change, and the shows that I visit these days don't seem much different from those I remember from my childhood.

One of the best country shows close to Perth would have to be the Waroona Show, held in the picturesque hamlet of the same name, just an hour and a half's drive south of the city. The Waroona Agricultural Society dates back to 1925, and every year holds the event, attracting not only local participants and guests, but also those from much further afield.

Many traditional attractions are part of the Waroona Show, and especially popular ones include wood-chopping, working sheep-dogs, livestock judging, hall exhibitions and trade stalls. If you're more of a home-maker than an outdoors type, how about checking out the cookery demonstrations, arts and crafts exhibitions and the fabulous fashion parade? So the littlies don't feel left out, there's heaps of special children's entertainment (such as Gymbus, an animal nursery, the Faery Folk Stage Show and a climbing wall) as well as the crazy, colourful side-show alley. At 8.30pm the day concludes in a big spectacular bang with Bill Wylie Memorial Fireworks.

With a day so jam-packed with exciting things to see and do, the Waroona Show is truly a family festival that everyone will feel part of. From the youngest member of your family to the oldest, there is sure to be something for everyone. To make the most of the whole schedule you might find it convenient to spend the Saturday night in Waroona and then slowly and leisurely return to Perth on the Sunday. Why not book into a local farm stay and really get into the country mood?

This year the Waroona Show will be held on Saturday, October 12th, from 8.00am until 9.00pm and everyone is warmly invited. Entrance is $12.00 for the general public, free for children 16 and under (if accompanied by a parent) and just $8.00 for pensioners, although to get this price you must show your pension card. Please note, dogs are not permitted on the showground, so please leave your pets at home. Also, since this is a family event, the consumption of alcohol is strictly prohibited and no alcohol is to be brought onto the premises.

In conclusion, this year's Waroona Show is gearing up to be one of the spring's top family events, so be sure to jot it into your social calendar.
