Setting off from Adelaide on the long drive to Port Augusta or the Flinders Ranges, the family get restless, and after an hour or so, their tummies start to rumble. The responsible driver also knows they ought to stop and revive and everyone will survive. But what is there to eat out amongst the scrub flats and saltbush?

Do not despair, because Cafe is located on a siding just off 11200 Augusta Highway, Warnertown! And the food is well worth the drive.

The warmer holds a selection of regular and gourmet pies, sausage rolls and pasties. I tried the cornish pasty and it was tasty, with a little pepper, but not too hot. The pastry was thicker than regular pasties, but not at all dry. Delicious. My friend asked for a custom toasted sandwich.

The cake and slice selection was fascinating. Curiosity led me to choose a round peppermint slice that was different from the typical rectangular slab. But then I noticed the cheesecakes. Huge pieces with exotic flavours like lemon and pineapple, peppermint and an unbelievable liquorice cheesecake.

My peppermint slice got put aside in a little paper bag for tea time, and I indulged in a gooey delight. It was so rich and sweet that I just had to leave the last mouthful on the plate.

Just a warning, on Saturday at least, they were preparing to shut up shop around 2:00 pm. People who arrived after us were disappointed. Some visited the pub next door, and I am told the fare there is great, especially if you time your visit for their schnitzel night.
