That Antarctic wind can make it tempting to crank up the heating and remain in denial and indoors until Melbourne returns to a sensible temperature, but there are plenty of winter activities to do without feeling the chill. Don't give up on the outside world just yet, here's a little list to keep you moving this winter.

1. Brave the outside at a toasty rooftop bar

Yes, you read correctly, rooftop bars are no longer a summer activity. Cosy up at one of these, they feature blankets for all their patrons and outside heating. Why should a nice drink outside be ruined by the winter chill?

Madame Brussels , Level 3, 59-63 Bourke Street Melbourne – It features adorable décor, a commendable drinks menu and an indoor area if you prefer.

Rooftop Bar , Curtin House, 6/252 Swanston Street Melbourne – Wonderfully heated and reasonable priced, perfect for a casual drink.

2. Vamp up your winter wardrobe

I find a good winter coat one of the hardest things to come by. If you're like me, you'll tend to remain in denial about the temperature and simply layer all your summer clothing on at once. Feel a little warmer with these shopping districts that are great for winter finds for all budgets and tastes.

Smith Street, Fitzroy and Collingwood – If you start at the Fitzroy end you'll find a fantastic array of athletic and camping outlets and clearance centres. Wander up towards the Collingwood precinct and you'll see a range of shops from vintage to smart casual and more. If you're looking for a great winter coat then I highly recommend 3 vintage and retro stores in particular. All have a great selection of men's and women's winter clothing as well as plenty of other treasures to keep you occupied.

- Vintage Garage, 318 Smith Street Collingwood
- The Lost and Found Market , 1-5 Perry Street Collingwood
- Sally's, 203 Smith Street Fitzroy

Gertrude Street – If you're already in the Smith Street area then head on to Gertrude Street. There are plenty of independent retailers, though things tend to be more expensive here.

Chapel Street – I imagine you're very familiar with the South Yarra end of Chapel Street, with the newly open Topshop and plenty of other chain stores, but I've put this here to remind you of the Windsor end. This end of Chapel Street houses a few quirkier shops with more interesting pieces if the other parts of Chapel Street aren't really your thing.

3. Find a great tea house

Yes we know, Melbourne does coffee and does it well, but let's not forget the old art of tea making. There are tea houses all over the city and in the outer regions as well. Whether it's high tea you're after or a more affordable tea and chat with friends there is plenty on offer. Here is a short list to get you going.

- Hopetoun Tea Rooms , Block Arcade 280-286 Collins Street, Melbourne – It's not cheap and it's often busy. It is best to make a reservation, but it's perfect if you'd like to make a special occasion of it.

- Miss Marple's Tea Room , 382 Mt Dandenong Tourist Road Sassafras – This is perfect if you're taking a wander through the Dandenongs. It has cute décor and their tea room is a dedication to the well loved Agatha Christie character.

-Oriental Tea House – This is a chain of tea houses that can be found at 4 locations across Melbourne. As the name suggests it has an oriental tea style and is a more affordable and accessible tea house if you're looking to have a chat with friends in any part of town. Find locations at here .

4. Get outside with a fun run

Don't leave your fitness blitz until summer, get motivated with a fun run. There are plenty on all through winter and with many going to a good cause you'll be getting fit and doing good. Victorian Road Runners run a lot of events and welcome non-members. Find out more at their website .

5. Get a decent book

Now, if I still haven't convinced you that the outdoors is a place worth occupying during the cold, then at least do the indoors right. Despite the closure of many of our major bookstores, there are still a number of wonderful independent shops across the city, so grab a book to pass the time until its bikini weather again. Below is a list of some bookshops with a nice twist

- Travellers bookstore, 294 Smith Street Collingwood – This bookshop will inspire you to get on the move. It is bright and has an open plan with a table in the centre and coffee available while you mull over which continent to choose. It has a great range from every lonely planet guide you can think of to traditional paper maps from all over the world.

- Readings – An independent bookshop with 6 locations over Melbourne. What makes them a little different is the many events they have on at their stores. Find out more at their website .

- Any op shop – Really! Most op shops have an excellent selection of secondhand books at a unbeatable price and it's guaranteed there is one within a few minutes of you, so there's no need to leave your house for too long.
