Do you feel like you need to escape life in the city, even if only for a day? Well the good news is, you can do this with the Wilderness Society and join them on a guided tour to enjoy the beauty of our forests, in Warburton. So you can really chill out, you don't even need to drive yourself, because this guided tour departs from Melbourne, so you can relax on the way out there too.

The bus will be departing from the Wilderness Society's at 355 King Street, West Melbourne. You will need to be there by 8:45 for a 9:00 am bus departure, with an expected return of 6:30-7:00 pm.

There are two current opportunities for this tour on Saturday, 7 April or Saturday, 26 May.

This is a fantastic opportunity to escape the city for a day, while discovering some of the beauty in the forest in the Central Highlands area with some of the crew from the Wilderness Society. The bus trip is over an hour out of Melbourne and when you arrive you'll be taken on a tour where you will see and experience some of Victoria's stunning forests. You will also be shown some of the areas that are in included in the Great Forest National Park proposal.

You will get to stroll along forest walkways, be soothed by the sounds of the forest, and stand in awe looking up at the tallest flowering tree in the world: the Mountain Ash (Eucalyptus regnans). This really is a very tall species of tree, which is much taller than the trees in Melbourne; you really should take the opportunity to see the grandeur of it, as it is truly remarkable when you look up and up to see its canopy in the forest.

You will learn about the habitats supported in these forests, the concerns faced by the region and the Wilderness Society's campaign to protect it by creating the Great Forest National Park. Most of Melbourne's drinking water comes from the Central Highlands, which is an area that will be visited too.

The Great Forest National Park is a proposal to create a recreational and conservation parkland to boost tourism and save the forests and wildlife. It stretches from Kinglake to Lake Eildon to Healesville and across to Mt Baw Baw. The park proposes to protect the Leadbeater's Possum from extinction and will also be a sanctuary, providing real and lasting protection to some of Victoria's, and the world's, rarest plant and animal species.

You'll be able escape the city's concrete jungle to experience the awesomeness of our magnificent forests, while at the same time, creating an awareness and gaining an understanding of the current threat they are in and the importance of preserving them.

A contribution of $40 is suggested to cover costs and if you can dig deeper, than anything above this will go towards supporting the campaign for the Great Forest National Park.

You can find out more about the Great Forest National Park here and register to attend with the Wilderness Society

So why not make the most to be able to relax, connect to nature and really take the time to enjoy these of these forests. You'll be able to experience these forests in the most informative way, with people who are passionate about maintaining and preserving them. So if you have ever thought about exploring these forests, this a great way to get out there and find out more.
