Full of exciting challenges for climbing and balancing, this new Nature Playspace at Murray Bridge unites the old and the new.

Once an overgrown corner of land with only an extremely high metal slide for a playground and a memorial marker acknowledging our war heroes, the revitalisation is respectful, beautiful and fun.

Visiting on a cold winter's day, we had the space to ourselves; but its location next to a kindergarten, school and shops mean it is seldom quiet most afternoons.

The Playspace is partially fenced. We entered from West Terrace, where there is car parking. Walking past the raised garden beds and citrus orchard, I spotted the delightful musical black swans.

Climbing up to the hill gives you access to the heavy rope bridge, twin slide and views over the whole Playspace.

Children won't be able to resist the large sandpit with natural boulders and water course with pump and dam gate.

There is a basket swing for shared sailing through the air, paths with different textures and logs for balancing. The climbing is unique to this Playspace with upright logs and ropes at different heights. Many of these logs were grown right in the park, and were given prolonged life when a diseased gum tree was cut down.

On the other side of this fence is a towering tree that marks another historical event. It was planted to commemorate the visit of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to South Australia in 1954. The path leads to the kindergarten. Some of the initial ideas for this Playspace were developed from a consultation between the kindergarten children and OPAL.

Entering from Third Street fills one with a sense of history and honour as you walk through the restored memorial gates, along the rosemary lined path and past the WWII memorial.

Bring your own chalk; add a drawing to the chalkboard and be part of the constantly evolving history of .
