Wanjoo (Welcome) Peace Boat - Free Event

The 96th voyage of the Japanese Peace Boat will arrive into Fremantle Port on Wednesday 24th January.

The Wanjoo (Welcome) Peace Boat event is being held at the B-Shed, in Fremantle from 4.00 pm, and it will commence with a Traditional Smoking and Welcome to Country Ceremony, and Fremantle Mayor's Welcome.



The amazing Nigel Wilkes and Mungart Yongah Dancers will perform along with some of Perth's finest musicians.

This is a FREE family event and there will be food and drinks available. It is sponsored by the City of Fremantle, Fremantle Port Authority and organised by the following:




At this event, you can listen to stories by Karina Lester, Maralinga survivor; Miyake Nobuo - Hiroshima atomic bomb survivor; Hasegawa Kenichi - Fukushima farmer; and traditional owners from uranium mining proposed areas in WA.



[b]ABOUT THE PEACE BOAT**
The Peace Boat is a passenger ship that travels the world on peace voyages.



Peace Boat's first voyage was organized in 1983 by a group of Japanese university students as a response to government censorship regarding Japan's "past military aggression in the Asia-Pacific". They chartered a ship to visit neighbouring countries and this was with the aim of learning first-hand about the war, from those who experienced it and initiating people-to-people exchange.

Since its foundation in 1983, Peace Boat has been active in the field of education for "peace and sustainability through the organization of educational voyages", and these are based on lectures, workshops, and study-exchange programmes both on-board the ship itself and in their ports of call.

Their activities are based on the philosophy that [i]"any problem faced by any community is a global challenge that must be tackled through cooperation between people, organizations and governments of the world".[/i]

Peace Boat's key messages are:

The voyage joins with Nobel Peace Laureate ICAN (International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons) in inviting Australia to sign the landmark 2017 Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

This current delegation on board the 96th voyage includes atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki and farmers from Fukushima, and is also joined by up to 1000 participants from around the world.



Peace Boat is not part of any political party or affiliated to any religious movement.
