History of Yum Cha
Yum Cha in Cantonese literally means to "drink tea".

In Australia, the phrase Dim Sum is often used in place of Yum Cha, and Yum Cha really refers to the meal which involves drinking tea and having Dim Sum dishes. Therefore Dim Sum is really just a term for different food dishes that you have during Yum Cha.

It involves a wide range of small dishes which are wheeled around the restaurant on trolleys, and the customer picks whatever they want from the trolley.

Given the long history of Yum Cha and Dim Sum, it is not really surprising that there are almost two thousand items that can make up the Dim Sum recipes in Asia. Some of the larger Asian, traditional Yum Cha restaurants often make as many as a hundred different dishes a day, however, in Australia, there are generally about 20 - 30 savoury choices.

There are of course, good and not so good restaurants that serve this, and as I had heard so much good about , I decided to try it for myself.

The Place
I have often driven past and there is a long line of people waiting outside, and for some time I did not realise that this was a restaurant!

Seeing a line like this definitely indicates that it is an excellent restaurant, and because of this, I made a booking the night before.

Is a large restaurant holding probably 150 people, with tables cramped quite close together. It is not a "flash" place, has plastic tablecloths, but was very clean and has heaps of atmosphere.

There was a constant stream of people walking in from when we arrived at 11.45 am, both for take-away, and also wanting a table. We opted for an early lunch in case there was a line, and traditionally Yum Cha is often served as a brunch.

The Food
Traditionally, you start the meal with the Yum Cha tea part of the meal, and this is Chinese tea, which is drunk weak and without milk.

After eyeing off the delicious dessert trolleys that kept coming past us, we eventually opted for the fried squid. Fried squid is often overdone and greasy in restaurants, however at neither this was case - they were neither greasy nor overdone and were tender, delicious, and there was no skimping on the size of the serving.

We had a bit of a break after that and then we tried the prawn dumplings which were fried but once again not greasy. This was not like other prawn dumplings where there is a lot of dough and little prawns. Each serving was crammed full of soft, tasty prawns, and there would have been about 3 or 4 prawns in each morsel.

Next, we tried one I had not tried before - a radish cake. This was delicious though very filling and there were 3 large cakes in one serve. It did not taste of radish as it was not at all hot and tasted quite like potato with slightly more flavour.

By this time I had had enough to eat, however, went on eating as it was all so delicious I did not want to miss out!

Next, we had what looked like cabbage rolls (but was not) - it was pork wrapped in something, probably a very thin egg dough, and although I do not usually eat pork, this was absolutely delicious, and I could not get enough of it.

I wanted to leave room for dessert as I just love the Asian desserts, however, I was battling to fit one in. The best choice when you have eaten enough is the Asian egg custard - a little pie filled with slightly sweetened egg custard and this was a delightful end to this meal. This mouthful of delights is called "Danta" in Asian and are said to originate from the Portuguese tarts which look similar.

Conclusion
This restaurant is indeed a treasure house and well worth a visit. The staff are friendly and always smiling, and it is well worth the wait to get a table.

The total bill was $36 for the two of us which is just $18 each.

They have unusual food, well cooked, fresh, and plenty of it.
