An innovative new playground in a growing Perth suburb
The new Wandi Playing Fields playground would have to be one of the best in Kwinana. In fact, if it wasn't for the magnificent Kwinana Adventure Park, I'd say it is the best.
The playground is located in the thriving Honeywood estate of Wandi, on the fringes of Kwinana and sitting next door to Honeywood Primary School. Having moved to Perth some 20 plus years ago when Wandi was nothing but horse paddocks (and the freeway still had traffic lights), I was not expecting this to be such a huge playground. Wandi has exploded in recent times and is now a growing community full of families who will obviously make great use of this wonderful park.
There are so many elements to this playground that make it accessible to people of all abilities. There are pram and wheelchair friendly paths all around, plus accessible play equipment such as a flying fox with a harness seat and a harness swing, located next to the bird's nest swing.
One of the most quirky parts of the playground is rock climbing steps on the ground – they are positioned on a gentle incline, so technically it is climbing, although it is the sort of rock climbing kids of all ages can try. There is also a 'roller' slide, which is a bit different.
But perhaps one of the quirkiest aspects – and one that is totally handy – is the bike repair stations. There are two stands with various sizes screwdrivers and spanners attached. Seriously, who thinks of this stuff?!
