Less than 25 kilometres from the centre of Sydney, the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park is a dreamland of walking tracks, picnic grounds, camping areas and gorgeous native Australian flora and fauna.
Feeling energetic? How about tackling one or two of the 17 numbered walking tracks leading from West Head in Sydney's beautiful Ku-ring-gai national park. Many of these tracks will reveal gorgeous beaches, lookouts, waterfalls - even ancient Aboriginal cave paintings.
West Head is the northern most tip of the park. From West Head lookout itself you'll see where 5 spectacular waterways meet the sea. The views have to be seen to be believed.

An easy walk to start with is the Willunga Trig. This is a leisurely walk of about 1.4 kilometres. It should take around 45 minutes, and you'll visit the highest point in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. At the top of the hill is an old trigonometrical station and some stunning panoramic views. On a clear day, you'll catch uninterrupted 180-degree views across Pittwater to the east and distant glimpses of Sydney city to the south.

Salvation Loop makes a circuit from West Head Road around the Salvation Loop track. It will take you around an hour and a half and it's about 4 kilometres. There are fewer views, but lots of native plants and animals. You'll pass through wet heathland vegetation and around a hanging swamp. You can explore rock outcrops along the way.

Resolute Track starts from the Resolute picnic area and takes you around the landscape of West head. You'll see ancient Aboriginal rock engravings and caves and after a climb down a steep slope through rainforest terrain, you can take the foreshore track to Great Mackerel Beach. It's up to you how long you take on this walk because you'll be stopping regularly to admire the scenery. Even though it's 3.5 kilometres, allow yourself about an hour and three quarters.

Elvina Track is slightly longer, at 4.5 kilometres and will take you around 2 and a half hours. You'll come across stunning waterpools and rainforests and arrive at the settlement of Elvina Bay. The track continues around towards Lovett Bay and to a small rainforest waterfall. From the top, there's a pool you can swim in and one of the best views of the park.

Getting to West Head is easy. From Church Point or Terrey Hills take McCarrs Creek Road and join West Head Road.
