Imagine ... walking sports! Image: Alexas_Fotos>Pixabay License no att req

As a young girl I used to love playing netball and often think back on those athletic days with nostalgia. Nowadays, my feelings of nostalgia have been replaced with 'am I fit enough to enjoy that little thrill of accomplishment when scoring a goal' or 'gosh, I hope I don't fall and break a leg or ... a nail'.

I may not be netball fit or even remember the rules, but if I could play the same sport in a genteel manner, wouldn't that be fun! So, you can imagine my excitement when I discovered that there are just such sports being played on the Sunshine Coast and they're called Walking Sports - yep, folks 'Walking Sports' is actually a thing, can you imagine! And, we have two types of walking sports on the Sunshine Coast, walking netball and walking football.

What is Walking Netball?

According to Netball Queensland, Walking Netball is a slower version of the game; it is authentic netball, but at a walking pace. Walking Netball has been designed so that anyone can play, regardless of age, gender, ability or fitness level. It's a great way to stay active and have fun, with minimal risk of injury. Definitely sounds like a go-to sport for those of us who still want to be active, but at a gentler pace on the 'old and used' joints. And, one of the best rules has to be 'a player must NEVER have both feet off the ground at once (i.e. no jumping, running)' - I love that, just up my court!

What is Walking Football?

Walking Football is a low-impact, team-based exercise, with specifically no contact between players, whilst always having at least one foot on the ground. There are very defined rules for Walking Football, with matches being played with modified formats, ensuring that all players have fun and enjoy playing. The Walking Footbafocusesfocusses on passing the ball, rather than speed and running, and is usually played on smaller pitches, with shortened game times.

Well that's all a bit of a revelation - walking sports - I'd never heard of them before, but what a great idea.
