Pancreatic cancer has a 5-year survival rate of 5% (Cure Cancer Australia) and unfortunately, due to its lack of early symptoms and the absence of screening tests for it, pancreatic cancer is often diagnosed late which results in it being the 5th most common cause of cancer death overall despite it being only the 9th and 10th most common cancer in women and men respectively (Cancer Council Australia). In 2016, an estimated 3,123 Australians were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer (Cancer Australia). An estimated 2,823 Australian pancreatic cancer survivors perished from the disease (Cancer Australia).

Before his death from the lethal disease, Avner Nahmani and his wife Caroline, set up the Avner Pancreatic Cancer Foundation . It is the only Australian foundation dedicated to raising awareness and funds for pancreatic cancer research and aims to double the number of pancreatic survivors by 2020. Though Avner died 13 months after his diagnosis in 2007, the Foundation hopes others will fare better. One of the foundation's main fundraising projects is their "Put Your Foot Down" family friendly walks around the country. Perth's fourth annual " Put Your Foot Down Walk " is set for Sunday 26th March at Sir James Mitchell Park.

Always a fun event where people don purple in support of the cause, the annual walk around Sir James Mitchell Park in with the beautiful view of the Swan River, is a Sunday morning event you can really feel good about attending. Register online, dress up in purple, take your family along, and you can even win a prize for the most creatively dressed! Whether you know someone or are suffering from pancreatic cancer, or if you just enjoy walks, this is a great way to spend your Sunday. There will be delicious food available to enjoy before and after the walk and you will be proud to know your support will help the foundation fund PhD scholarships, the foundation's support of the Australian Pancreatic Cancer Genome Initiative, and its life-saving projects like its surgical workshop.

The Foundation has already raised nearly $8 million, half of that helping to fund 12 pancreatic cancer research grants Australia wide, including one led by Curtin University's Professor Marco Falasca. Prof Falasca's project aims to identify " more effective and less toxic treatments for patients with pancreatic cancer. "

For further information about the foundation, check out their documentary on YouTube here . The "Put Your Foot Down Walk" is just one event that helps ensure current and future suffers of pancreatic cancer have more than just the currently very limited treatments and research available to help them. The event is also an opportunity for families who want to be among people who understand how this disease affects sufferers and their families. Please show your support.
