Where do I begin? WALK is a masterpiece, from start to finish. I'm not sure I have enough words to accurately describe how amazing this show is. Described by Seesaw magazine as "mesmerizing...a choreographic, sonic and visual adventure", WALK combines dance, sculpture, set design, lighting and sound effects into an experimental and dreamlike theatre experience.

A talented team of creatives worked together to help bring WALK to life. Bobby Russell (MoveMoveMove, Perth Festival) worked as the lead creative and stars as the main performer in the show. Opie Robinson (Gassed Up, Cool Change) did the costume and sculpture designs, Joe Lui (The Ugly) worked on the lighting, and Peter McAvan (Midnight Elevator Records) did the sound design.

I've reviewed a lot of shows at the Blue Room theatre in the past year. WALK is without a doubt the most impressive show that I've seen in a long time. I was so impressed with every element that went into making this show. When we arrived at the theatre, we were escorted into a long corridor, that had been decorated with fake clouds that had been lit with blue lights. We could hold up our hand and touch the clouds. It was magical. We were told to take our seats, or if we choose, to sit on some bean bags which had been placed on the edge of the stage. The stage was darkly lit and decorated with bulky objects, which I thought resembled coral. We could hear sound effects which were very creepy and reminded me of music from science-fiction and horror movies from the 1970s-80s.

Bobby Russell's performance in WALK was one of the best I've ever seen. The moment when they first appeared on stage, framed in a doorway and blanketed in white light, was just mind-blowing. It felt like a scene straight from Alien. The lighting used in this show was some of the most spectacular I've ever seen. There would be a flash of light, Russell would twirl across the stage, and then darkness would fall again. Their movements were fluid, like they were a shapeshifter, journeying across a dreamscape. The use of shadow, white light, and colour in the show was superb. I thought the most clever use of lighting in the show was when Russell pulled out a small torch and used it to light portions of their face close-up. Just amazing.

I was a big fan of the costumes used in WALK. Opie Robinson designed some fascinating pieces. There were a number of impressive outfits used in the show, but the one that stood out the most to me was a hooded robe that Russell crawls into and is then slowly hoisted up off the ground. It looked like a sea monster crawling out from under a rock. As Russell stood upward, their outfit changed shape, becoming more human. I liked how Russell was able to convey so much emotion through movement and how the show was able to morph the outfit into something else.

WALK is currently showing at the Blue Room Theatre until Saturday, 30 July 2022. The show contains strobe lighting, haze, and nudity. It runs for 50 minutes and is suitable for people 15 years and older. Ticket prices are $30.00 for full price and $25.00 for concession.
