Wakerley is hiding a secret that it can't contain for too much longer. Tucked away in a leafy corner of this ever expanding suburb is a recreational area in Red Gum Crescent that has something for everyone.

Central to the area is a playground fringed by native Australian trees and home to a myriad of Australian fauna. The playground has an assortment of equipment suitable for a range of ages. I've been taking my son here since he was 3 years old and, at 9 years old, he still enjoys it.

With two gas barbecue facilities available and a large amount of seating available in the shelter that squats at the front of the playground, this place is perfect for a kid's birthday party. It has wheelchair and pram access via the ramp beside the steps. The only thing it lacks is toilets but apparently council is currently looking into the viability of putting them in.

A path rings the playground before passing through the enormous oval next door before looping back to the playground. On any given day you can see kids of all ages cycling or scootering around the path. It's long enough to give younger kids a decent ride while being interesting enough to give older kids the motivation to go around the track over and over again. If you look close enough at the copse of trees dividing the park from the oval, you will discover a 'secret' bush track that older kids like to cut through. It's a dirt track through a long pocket of trees which takes less than 30 seconds (fast pedalling on a bike) to go through and is perfectly safe yet gives kids the feeling that they've done something daring by braving it by themselves.

In the oval next door to the playground is a dog park which is large enough to give big dogs a good run. Like all good dog parks, it has a tap for humans and dogs and a plastic bag dispenser for those little surprises pooches are forever bestowing on us.

Across from the dog park is newly installed exercise equipment. At this stage there is no shade there but young trees have been planted around it and it's hoped that they will provide a natural shelter in the future. My son and I have spent quite a few hours exercising here in the late afternoon and I have to say it is quite relaxing to be exercising outdoors while watching the colourful display provided by the numerous rainbow lorikeets that call this area home.

With all of this in the one area, there is still an enormous amount of room on the wide open space of the oval. If it's windy enough you could have a good go at flying a kite there. If not, you could easily hold a couple of kids soccer games there and there would still be room to spare.

If you tire of exercising, riding or playing, wander through the trees nearby and look up high. You might be lucky enough to spot some wooden boxes that have been installed for squirrel glider possums. One local resident has even installed his own version of possum boxes or bird houses in some of the trees and they're worth a look too.

There's quite a lot of bird life in the area. Hands down, my favourites are the finches and fairy wrens that flit through the foliage surrounding the recreational area.

All in all, the area has almost everything you could ask for an afternoon of fun with the kids and the dog.
