The world premiere of Wake in Fright is currently being staged at the Malthouse Theatre until 14 July, 2019. Wake in Fright is based on the acclaimed best-selling novel by the late author Kenneth Cook. This is the first mainstage adaptation of the renowned Australian novel written in 1961. The unsettling cult classic film directed by Ted Kotcheff followed a decade later in 1971 and a television mini-series remake in 2017.

It's the harrowing story of a young school teacher who becomes stranded in a mining town on this way home for a Christmas holiday. John is well-read but cashless and jobless when this outback misadventure strands him in the harsh and remote Aussie settlement of Bundanyabba. John makes new mates who are quick with a drink, but with every scull, violence lurches forward. Are these blokes fair-dinkum, or is there something more sinister at the heart of this little Aussie town?

Sounds intriguing. I wont be able to get to the show but I'll check out the book.
