No need to cross the ditch to celebrate New Zealand's Waitangi Day. Join in the Queensland celebrations of this Kiwi tradition in Ipswich on 15 February 2025 for a taste of culture, food and tradition .
What is Waitangi Day?
As the National Day of New Zealand, Waitangi Day commemorates the signing of the Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi) in 1840 between British representatives and Maori chiefs. The Treaty is considered to be the country’s founding document.
In 1973,
Waitangi Day officially became a national holiday to mark the signing of the Te Tiriti o Waitangi. However, the Government renamed the day New Zealand Day to foster a sense of nationhood. New Zealanders use the day to reflect on the country’s history and cultural heritage.
Come and join the New Zealand-centered activities at Waitangi Day in Ipswich, just outside of Brisbane, at the Nicholas Street Precinct from 9am to 2 pm. The
