This is where you will find the best waffles in Adelaide.
Who is the Waffle King? His name is Antonino Malvetti; a man from Belgium who has been quietly serving us waffles for years at Bracegirdles, Chocolate No. 5, The Belgian Beer Café and Chocolate Bean. Now the man behind the waffle has opened his own store, which is great news for lovers of fresh food.
No longer prepared elsewhere, frozen in storage and moved from place to place to be re-heated and re-served, these waffles are freshly baked in store, often before your very eyes.
While these unique and delicious waffles are undoubtedly the star menu offering, The Waffle King offers more than just waffles. There is a wide selection of crepes (sweet and savoury), and other European-style delectables such as chocolate fondue. For chocaholics, milk chocolate, white chocolate and dark chocolate are also available from their three deliciously churning chocolate fountains. The waffle king also offers take-away services, catering and outdoor dining.
The service is second to none. Staff are refreshingly welcoming and will take you through the menu offering helpful recommendations with a friendly smile. Antonino himself is usually around and always eager to tell you his story and discuss all things waffle.
The usual café subjects are in evidence on the drink menu, but hot chocolate from the fountain provides a fun and unique taste experience. Another more exotic and unusual beverage is their Violet Tea, a new French addition to their range of hot tea flavours. According to Antonino, the Tea must be prepared at an unusual 60 degree temperature to gain the full flavour of the flower and in order not to burn off the petals. It tastes and smells unbelievable.
This waffle palace is tucked away in Dover Gardens, so it is often seen as a bit of a secret gem once discovered.
At the risk of sounding like I'm over-selling the place, it truly is perfection; however Nino will usually ask you what you thought of your meal after you've finished (regardless of how many times you've been there!) I highly recommend finding out for yourself why The Waffle King has earned his crown.
