Welcome to September!

We've now made it to the ninth month of the year and the beginning of a new season: spring.

The word September comes from the Latin language meaning 'seven'. And that's because September was actually the seventh month in the old ancient Roman calendar (the calendar our modern Western one originates from). Anyway, over time, two extra months were added at the beginning of the year: January and February. And so September was pushed down to ninth place and therefore became the ninth month. But it continued to retain its name.

Here in Australia, the month of September is well known for Father's Day which falls on the first Sunday of the month. But did you know September also has some other, more wacky kinds of holidays?

If you want to celebrate more than just fathers this September, here are other special days you can celebrate!

So why not (re)read Tolkien's books today? Or watch the movies. And don't wear shoes on this day because the hobbits in the books are always barefooted!
