March is the third month of our calendar year. It's named after the ancient Roman god of war, Mars. In Australia's part of the southern hemisphere, March is the beginning of a new season, autumn, and the coming of the cold dark months of winter. But in the northern hemisphere, the opposite happens. March heralds the beginning of spring and the coming of the golden days of summer.
There are lots of holidays and special days celebrated around the world during the month of March. Such as the autumn or spring equinoxes, International Earth Hour, International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, Honen Matsuri (a harvest and fertility festival) in Japan, the Jewish Passover (if it falls within March), the Christian celebration of Easter (if it also falls within March), and the day when everyone can be Irish for one day: St Patrick's Day.
