The eighth month of the year has a very imperial flavour to it, and that's because it was named long ago in honour of the first ancient Roman Emperor, Augustus.

But if August isn't your birth month, then there's really nothing much to look forward to during the eighth month of the year here in Australia. OK, so there's National Science Week and it's the last month of winter and there's Picnic Day if you live in the Northern Territory and if you're Catholic, there's Saint Mary MacKillop's Feast Day as well as the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. But August isn't as frenetic as December or the Easter months, nor does it have the fragrance, fetes and football grand finals of Spring or the long hot days, barbecues and cricket matches of summer.

However, for those of us who love to celebrate all year round, August is actually a great month because it's that in-between month where you get to breathe and take a break after your Christmas in July celebrations and before Spring fever and spooky Halloween arrive. But even if you are despairing of having nothing to celebrate in August, then stop! Because the good news is, August is also full of other holidays. Holidays that are a little on the wacky side, but definitely holidays that will add some good cheer to these last weeks of winter.

Here are some wacky days you can celebrate this month.

**August 3
Watermelon Day**
Watermelon is a true superfood, packed with Vitamins A and C and bursting with antioxidants as well. Celebrate this amazing fruit by having it in all of your meals today. For example, have a big glass of watermelon juice for breakfast; make a lovely watermelon, feta cheese, and mint salad for lunch; then for dinner, why not make watermelon salsa to go with your fish?

**August 6
Fresh Breath Day**
That's right, folks. There is actually a special day in the year that celebrates fresh breath, and it's today! Why not replenish your stash of mints and breath fresheners today? And If you are overdue or up for an appointment with your dentist, maybe today is the time to make an appointment with them.

**August 7
International Beer Day**
Celebrate the oldest beverage in the world by trying new flavours of beer, visiting a brewery, or just enjoying time with friends over a schooner of beer or two.

**August 9
Book Lovers Day**
A special holiday for booklovers. Buy a new book or visit your local library, clean out your bookshelves, or just read, read, read!

**August 12
Middle Child Day**
I'm a middle child so I'll definitely be celebrating this day! If you are a middle child too, today is a day to treat yourself - you deserve it. If you know of a middle child make the day special for them – they deserve it.

**August 13
Left-Handers Day**
Left-handers, today is your day!

**August 19
World Photo Day**
Celebrate today by learning and reading more about the history and science behind photography; if you have always wanted to learn photography, maybe today is the time to start taking lessons; and if you are a photographer, why not volunteer your time to teach your craft and trade to others? You can also take lots of photos of your life today and put them all together into a photo book.

**August 22
Be An Angel Day**
Today encourages us all to be angels to those in need. So do something to help a stranger; perform a random act of kindness such as paying for the coffee of the person behind you at the coffee shop or leaving a small gift in your neighbor's mailbox; volunteer your time and money to a charitable organization; or if you know of someone who is going through a difficult time, give them your support and let them know that you are there for them.

**August 24
Pluto Demoted Day**
Today in 2006 Pluto's status was downgraded from a full-sized planet to a dwarf planet by the International Astronomical Union (IAU). You can celebrate today by learning more about the planets as well as dwarf planets and other astronomical objects like comets, asteroids and meteor showers. You can also make a model of our solar system.

**August 26
Dog Appreciation Day**
Celebrate your best friend (or friends) today by spoiling them with special treats, spending time with them, walking them, and playing with them. If you are unable to have a dog in your family, why not celebrate today by donating your time and money to the local animal and dog shelter?

**August 28
Bow Tie Day**
If you have never worn a bow tie before, today is the day to get one and spend some time learning how to tie it. Or why not hand knit, crochet, or sew your own unique bow tie to wear to your next event?

**August 30
Frankenstein Day**
This day celebrates the life and times of English author Mary Shelley who wrote one of the word's most-read monster novel, Frankenstein. Get a copy of Frankenstein and spend the day reading it, or watch one of the many TV and film adaptations of the book. And why not make some fun Frankenstein cupcakes like the ones below?

Have a wacky August, everyone!
