Welcome to April!

And so we've made it the fourth month of the Western calendar year. Like all of the months in our calendar, the month of April originates from ancient Rome. It's usually associated with spring in the northern hemisphere, and autumn in the southern hemisphere. April is a month full of celebrations and commemorations around the world such as Easter, April Fool's Day, St George's Day, ANZAC Day, and special remembrance days for the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986 and the sinking of that infamous ship, the RMS Titanic, in 1912.

However, did you know that April has some other special holidays too? Holidays that are a little on the weird and wacky side? Here are some of them!

**April 3
World Party Day**
Today aims to achieve social change and harmony by encouraging people to celebrate life by partying. So why not throw a party for your family and friends and ask them to bring their friends and coworkers along?
You could also organise a street party. Peace begins at home and by being neighbourly. Spend time with your neighbours and celebrate your neighbourhood.

**April 5
Read a Road Map Day**
When was the last time you picked up a map and used it for directions? No, not a GPS or a map app, but an actual paper map? Celebrate today by taking a short road trip and using only paper maps to guide you.

**April 10
Siblings Day**
Spend some time with your siblings today. If you live away from them, why not call them and talk to them? Or what about paying them a surprise visit?

**April 11
Submarine Day**
Today, learn more about the art and science of submarines.
You can also celebrate the day by consuming as many submarine sandwiches as you can! And why not listen to the Beatles' Yellow Submarine song all day long?!

**April 13
Scrabble Day**
Today celebrates the popular board game created in 1938 by Alfred Mosher Butts, an American architect. So gather around with your family and friends and play Scrabble!

**April 14
Look up the sky day**
Take some time off during the day and go out to look at the sky. You never know what you may be able to see!

**April 16
Eggs Benedict Day**
An American invention, a delicious Eggs Benedict includes an English Muffin, topped with bacon or ham, poached eggs, and Hollandaise sauce. Celebrate today by making Eggs Benedict for yourself and your family.

**April 17
Haiku Poetry Day**
Haiku is a type of short poetry that is usually three sentences long. First popularized in Japan in the 17th century, Haiku as a poetry genre has been adopted by many languages around the world. In English, the genre first became mainstream in the early 20th century. Celebrate today by learning how to write your own haikus. Or pick up an anthology of haiku poetry and spend some time reading haikus.

**April 20
Look Alike Day**
Look Alike Day is a fun holiday invented to celebrate identical twins, clones, copycats and anyone else who you look like or who looks like you.

**April 22
Jelly Bean Day**
Have jelly beans with all your meals. Or make art using colorful jellybeans.

**April 23
Impossible Astronaut Day**
Fans of the British science fiction television series, Doctor Who, celebrate April 23 as Impossible Astronaut Day. Why not binge watch some Dr Who today?

**April 26
Pretzel Day**
Considered to be one of the oldest surviving snacks in the world, the humble but delicious pretzel is thought to have originated in Europe, possibly created by monks in monasteries. So make sure you eat lots of pretzels today!

**April 29
Zipper Day**
We all tend to take for granted most things around us. The humble zipper that is holding up your pants, skirt, or dress right now is one of those things. So the zipper rightly deserves a special day of its own! Spend the day contemplating on other similar objects that are simple, but vital to our day to day lives.

And so that's a whole year of very special holidays done and dusted!

There's been so much to celebrate, from Talking Like Yoda Day, Middle Child Day, World Juggling Day, Fight Procrastination Day and Vanilla Cupcake Day, to days celebrating dentists, Super Mario, bunsen burners, Daleks, bicarbonate of soda, asking stupid questions, and fresh breath! We've had a whole year celebrating the bizarre, the unique, the weird, the wacky and the wonderful!

Life is a celebration. Why just stick to standard holidays such as Christmas and Easter, when we can celebrate every other day? Because every day of the year is definitely worth celebrating!

If you haven't done so already, be sure to check out the weird and wacky holidays in the following months.
