WA Roller Derby - Electric Screams V Sonic Doom

Perth has an evolving Roller Derby scene. Stripped of its fetish and playful 2010 persona, Derby is now considered an athletic sport by all who play and watch.

The team's train regularly and often, spread throughout Perth in sports courts and roller rinks. You may have seen them before and not been able to guess what they were doing wrapped up in protective padding and circling each other on skates.

But now with seven leagues in WA, including metro and regional areas, the sport is as big and as established as ever. On Saturday 3rd of September, WA Roller Derby will be hosting their 6th home game of the year, the final one before the season's grand final.

Sonic Doom, the reigning champions are going up against Electric Screams. No tutus or ruffle butts insight (well maybe one), just hard hitting and athletic women out to be the best on the track.

The skaters look as if they are floating on air, jumping, juking, and bouncing all over the track. If they get knocked down, they're back up in a flash. The adrenaline makes the atmosphere electric.

The league also has two travel teams, one that competes locally, and one interstate. They travel multiple times a year, versing other teams in nationwide tournaments including teams from all over Australia and New Zealand. The A team, Wards of the Skate, are off to Melbourne and will compete against three other leagues. Their skills (all WotS skaters are also on home teams) will be on display next Saturday.

At the family friend event, there will be an array of activities for everyone, including a colouring-in station, face painting, and hair braiding. There will even be a bake sale and a fully stocked bar, so treat yourself and the family to something new.
