If you are looking for something a little different for your next getaway, either with the kids or without, have you ever thought of going to a farmstay? Here are few options, not too far from Perth, that might tickle your fancy.

1. Gumleaf Cottage Farmstay

Claiming to be Perth's favourite local Farmstay where you can join in for a hayride, feed the animals every morning, book a pony ride, or just relax at one of the many wonderful vineyards, cafes, restaurants or pubs in the local area. Only 30km from Perth City in the Shire of Mundaring, Perth Hills. Gumleaf Cottage Farmstay provides a wonderful country escape and a fun-filled holiday experience for the whole family.

Featuring views over the pasture paddocks and adjoining bush reserves each of the two villas has its own verandah or patio with private BBQ. Each includes reverse cycle air conditioning for year-round comfort and a kitchen/dining and lounge area with a flat-screen TV in both villas. Tea, Coffee, Sugar and Long-life Milk is provided for your convenience on arrival. There is a private bathroom with a shower (including a bath) and a hairdryer in each unit, along with free toiletries. Gumleaf Cottage Farmstay provides a children's playground, huge trampoline, see-saw, ride-on toys and bikes free of charge. With over 100 friendly farm animals to feed there's plenty of fun for the whole family. You can join the owners on their daily feeding runs and get up close and personal with kangaroos, chickens - collecting the eggs - peacocks, turkeys, rabbits and many many more. You might even get the chance to bottle feed a lamb or two.

Their picturesque three-acre dam is the ideal place to take out a canoe, fish for rainbow trout, enjoy a picnic with the family or you can just relax and enjoy the scenery. 3. Lucieville Farm Chalets

Lucieville farm is situated within the South West Wine region of Western Australia, only eight kilometres south of Bridgetown, it is ideally positioned to use as a central hub to explore the many quaint surroundings of the beautiful south west. They offer family-friendly activities on-site such as animal petting, feeding and milking of cows.

Lucieville offers four standard open-plan chalets, two large chalets, the Farm Cottage and Ringwood House. All of their Bridgetown accommodation options are fully self-contained with amenities including a washing machine, small kitchen with gas stove, pots, cutlery, crockery and microwave. For cosy winter warmth, each unit has a slow combustion wood heater.
 


4. Misty Valley Country Cottages

Only 10 minutes from Denmark, Misty Valley Country Cottages is the perfect location to relax and unwind for your holiday. Misty Valley is a great choice for a fantastic family farmstay, or a cosy getaway for two, with your own secluded self-contained chalet cottage on 110 acres of sweeping views, close to all the local attractions. Bluehills Farmstay, Harvey, is a beautiful property overlooking the magnificent Harvey Dam and enjoys rolling views of the Darling Range.

Bluehills offers three self-contained chalets that can each sleep up to six people, and include split system air-conditioners and wood tile fires. Each kitchen is fully self-contained with a microwave oven, gas stovetop, electric oven and all your basic kitchen needs.

The farm has a central pool, BBQ, and play area between the chalets. The play equipment included a trampoline, swings and a cubby house. But the main attraction of the farmstay is the animals. Bluehills has horses, a pig, alpaca, cows, sheep, chickens and rabbits, which you are welcome to feed, pat and cuddle to your heart's content.
 


6. Karridale Cottages

Karridale Cottages and Hop Farm offers both studio and two-bedroom accommodation set amongst native bushland in Karridale. Their self-contained cottages are the perfect way to get back to nature, relax and unwind while still being close to all that Margaret River and the South West have to offer.

Karridale Cottages and Hop Farm offer guests more than just a relaxing place to stay, they have a bushwalking track through the native bushland on the property - you can even take part in a nature scavenger hunt on your walk. there are kangaroo viewing points, a dog exercise area and the neighbours even have some friendly horses who like to say hello. You can even check out their hop yard where they grow the hops to produce locally made craft beer. Karrak Reach Forrest Retreat offers a choice of three accommodations, all of which you will find stylishly appointed and comfortable. 8. Ferguson Farmstay

Ferguson Farmstay is located in the beautiful Ferguson Valley, only 30 minutes drive from Bunbury and less than two hours' drive south of Perth. The chalets and a function centre are situated on top of the undulating Darling ranges, giving spectacular views of farmland and vineyards all the way to the Bunbury coast. Boasting 11 fully self-contained chalets, a function centre, amphitheatre and over 1,000 roses, Ferguson Farmstay is the ideal destination for your next family holiday.

Ferguson Farmstay has a menagerie of farm animals for kids young and old, a large playground, a tennis court, basketball court, trampoline and a large lawn area. Families are invited to participate in farm activities that take place every morning of their stay.

Each of the 11 chalets are fully self-contained, with reverse cycle air conditioning, wood fireplace, and all offer uninterrupted views to Bunbury and the ocean. Each chalet differs in size accommodating between four to eight people, but all have generous verandas equipped with gas barbecues and outdoor settings. Each chalet is set up as a small house, with separate bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchen/living areas. The kitchens are equipped with a four-burner stove with grill and oven, full-sized fridge with freezer, a microwave, all cooking utensils, cutlery and crockery.
 



9. Sunflowers Animal Farm & Farmstay

Each of the on-site units includes tv with a DVD player, a fully equipped kitchen, including microwave, reverse cycle air-conditioning, log fireplace and there is a BBQ area and playground guests can use. Sunflowers is ideal for anyone who wants a farmstay experience to remember.
 



10. Sunnyhurst Chalets

Sunnyhurst Chalets are set amongst the glorious, rolling hills, or Bridgetown, away from fast-paced city life. Their chalets cater for families, singles or larger groups (up to thirty-two people) Your stay can be an intimate one, family holiday or the property can be exclusively yours if you book all five chalets for an extended group event.

Each chalet is clean and comfortable and set up with everything you need for your stay, from a fully equipped kitchen and cooking utensils for your own BBQ on your private balcony. Fabulous places to stay. If you are spending several days at the one location it's a much better choice than motels. They could be considered a taste of a tree-change. Kids would love open spaces.

What a great list. I think farm stays are particularly good for kids so they can see something of farming and how the animals are kept.
