I wanted to take my friend to somewhere we hadn't tried before, so I asked my mum for a recommendation and she chose Vorea. I know it's sad but it's true, my 76 year old mum knows more cafes than me. My explanation for this fact is that she can swan around all day long while some of us have to work.

The owners of Vorea are experienced; they also own Vorea at Polaris and Degani at Coburg Hill. They are all quite different but equally extensive in menus and they all serve quality food by well-trained staff. The Bundoora cafe is a surprise package - modern styling and 80s music! They have a well stocked bar and impressive looking cocktails.

Everyone who ate with us tonight enjoyed their meal and that doesn't usually happen! I particularly loved the pumpkin gnocchi. These large soft ricotta balls just melted in my mouth. The sauce was tasty and it was topped with lots of sliced Parmesan cheese. It was a generous serve for under $20 and luckily there was more than enough for my lunch the next day.

The kids had the usual: fish and chips and chicken nuggets and chips ($9). These budding tweens were more than satisfied with their servings. The chicken Parma was very large. My adult son was able to spare some chips and didn't finish his meat (thick Parma) or salad.

The birthday boy enjoyed an open souvlaki, which included fresh salad. This was very reasonably priced and the meat tender. It didn't sound like a large meal but it was.

The total bill for all of us averaged out to about $20 per person including drinks (no alcohol). Even though they serve desserts, they were quite happy for us to take our own birthday cake.

There is a large outdoor decking. This would be lovely on a fine day, but it was freezing the night we attended so we ate inside. The kids were amused by the 80s music being played on the big screens. They looked nervous when Funky Town was playing. Maybe they thought I was going to start dancing?

Apparently breakfast is their busiest time of day. They had an inviting list of possibilities. Vorea's have a loyalty coffee card with the 10th coffee free. This would go down very well with some of their cakes. They sell cheesecake, cupcakes, decadent mini mud cakes, chocolate tarts and crumbles. I wish they would stock less… The choice is just too hard for an indecisive dessert purchaser like me.

This is definitely worth a try. It can be seen from the main road, but is easily missed when you turn off Plenty Rd. Enter via the small service road or you will need to go all the way around the block to get back to it. Bon Apetite.
