Give something back this Christmas by volunteering your time for a charitable cause.

Volunteering on Christmas Day itself is extremely popular. Positions often fill early and preference is given to existing volunteers. However, there are plenty of other ways to volunteer casually throughout December.

Consider becoming a year-round volunteer, if possible. While many charities do have more work to do around the holiday season, they operate year-round and could always do with an extra pair of hands.

[SECTION]Gift wrapping[/SECTION]
Volunteer your time to work at a gift wrapping station in the lead up to Christmas. The shopping centre wrapping stations raise money for their organisation or charity of choice by exchanging a gift wrapping service for a donation from shoppers. All training is provided, so you do not need to be a master at wrapping.

Currently open opportunities for gift wrapping volunteering include MS Australia , Whittlesea Community Connections , and Ronald McDonald House .

[SECTION]Gift sorting[/SECTION]
Charities which distribute Christmas gifts to those in need require some help sorting out the piles of presents given by generous donors. Lend your hands to Melbourne City Mission by sorting and distributing gifts in the lead up to Christmas. Find out more and apply for the volunteer role here .

[SECTION]Christmas tree salesperson[/SECTION]
The Oakleigh Centre , which supports people with intellectual disabilities, runs an annual Christmas Shop selling Christmas trees, as well as supplies for wrapping, as their biggest fundraising event. Donate your time by working in the Christmas Shop, assisting customers and performing some physical labour such as carrying trees. The Christmas Shop is open daily until the 22nd of December, and you can work as little as one shift. Apply to help here .

[SECTION]Christmas Carols volunteer[/SECTION]
With plenty of community Carols events occurring in late December, there are plenty of opportunities to donate your time and skills. There are many diverse roles to fill, so there is sure to be something you can do. You could work as a fundraiser selling merchandise for Vision Australia or help out with running the event itself, such as this opportunity in Doveton .

[SECTION]Christmas Day volunteering[/SECTION]
Volunteering on the day itself is highly sought after. Many people who do not have celebrations of their own for Christmas Day find that volunteering to help with a Christmas Lunch is a fantastic way to spend an otherwise lonely day.

You do have to get in early for most Christmas Day events, but there are still a few which are seeking volunteers. You could lend your services as a kitchen hand with Boroondara Volunteer Resource Centre or help with prep, serving and clean-up, or picking up guests at the Diamond Creek Uniting Church annual Christmas lunch.

[SECTION]January Holiday Program volunteer[/SECTION]
Once Christmas is over, there are still some seasonal volunteering opportunities to be had. Consider volunteering your time in January for a fantastic community cause. LiveWires, an organisation which provides social and educational programs for children growing up in Collingwood's public housing, is running a holiday program in late January. Volunteer for as little as one day of the program. Find out more and apply here .
