All play and no work makes me a dull girl - I volunteer too
Anyone reading my articles might think my life is "all play and no work", but I actually have selected a few not-for-profit organisations that I donate my time to. Dress For Success, located in Fortitude Valley, is one of these.
[ADVERT]Also known as Suited to Success, the organisation was formed in 2008 with a view to assisting disadvantaged women enter or return to the workforce. They take donations of clothes from the public; women are referred from job search agencies and the boutique dresses clients in interview-appropriate clothing. They also provide tips on personal grooming, assistance with putting together a CV, and interview techniques. With a recent expansion to providing services for male clients as well, volunteers can assist here in the boutique, which operates most days of the week.
From the piles of donations received (and more are always welcome), there's always some clothing that isn't quite right for the boutique; often this is because there's already a suitable range within a size, or it's not the right season, however, this clothing won't go to waste. Once a month, this clothing is put on sale directly to the public and volunteers are always welcome to sort the clothing for the boutique or for the monthly garage sale.
One Saturday a month, a wide variety of pre-loved clothing items are available for cash purchase for $5 per item at the garage sale. Now that's cheaper than Vinnies or Sallies!
This is another volunteering opportunity, and I can personally attest that helping out at a garage sale is a great way to have fun, find some absolute bargain clothes, and feel great for helping out a good cause. Don't forget to bring cash.
Other services that Dress For Success provide that you could volunteer for include the breakfast club (assisting clients with resumes, cover letters, confidence building and mock interviews) as well as the career centre (one-on-one support for clients seeking work).
