The highlight of the 9th Vogue American Express Fashion's Night Out was the flower display on the 1st floor of the David Jones [DJ's] Elizabeth Street store. This is the 9th time that 670 retail stores in the heart of the CBD. teamed up to celebrate the beginning of the spring annual shop-a- thon.

Sydney's big night was Thursday 6th September and the best place to be was outside DJ's, [the flowers in the windows must not be missed] for the annual flower show. For the past 30 years, thousands of visitors from all over Australia have travelled to the DJ's to see this famous spectacle. Staff way back in the 1920's used to bring flowers from their own gardens and place them on the counters to herald in spring.

DJ's changed hands over 10 years ago and many were apprehensive as to the future of the store. The hope was that the quality and wonderful service would continue. Let's hope the philosophy of the man who built the Ritz Hotel in Paris will be attributed to the new owners. 'Don't give 'em what they want- give 'em something better!' Market Street has been sold and the top 4 floors of Elizabeth Street are now being refurbished, no doubt the opening will blow our socks off.

My mother bought my baby clothes in DJ's and I am still a loyal customer. To her horror, they issued credit cards to the customers who had charge accounts. I was able to sign on her account so I got my first credit card at a very tender age. My school uniforms, party dresses, race clothes from the then 7th floor continued to fill my wardrobe. The contents of my home are scattered with goodies from DJ's, I even had my stockings mended for 2 shillings when it was de rigueur to wear them night and day.

My visit to the Fashion's Night Out started with one of my favourite lunches at the Antipasto Bar on the ground floor of the Market Street store, which will sadly close next year as the building has been sold. I then investigated the next 4 floors of this building. For the gentlemen and indeed the ladies, a whisky bar was open. I hadn't had a whisky sour for many a year - it was a nice start to my afternoon. Next onto the first floor of the Elizabeth Street store, where most of the fun was happening. Champagne, fashion shows and lots of vending machines spitting out wonderful prizes. Discounts galore were offered by most brands so the shop-a thon was in full swing.

No doubt this now annual event will be repeated next year. If you have an Amex card, save your points and go mad and bag a bargain.

I'm off now to see Women in Black - see you next year at the annual flower show.
