Walking past Food Society one afternoon, the scribbled words 'Vodka High Tea' on a mirror catches my eye. Not knowing what it entailed, it seemed like a good excuse to get together with the girls.

A posse of excited ladies, open the glass doors and enter into the den of Food Society. You immediately feel like you've stepped back into a forgotten era, beautiful jumbled antique pieces reminiscent of grandma's living room and kitchen. The bar is located directly opposite the entry and your eyes gravitate to the shelves decked out with 70 vodkas, liqueurs and spirits. The lighting is dark adding to the romantic ambience. The golden hue exudes from the chandeliers and eyes wander around to every nook and cranny attempting to see all the knick knacks at once.

Settling in at the bar with jenga set in tow, browsing the cocktail menu, we kick off with a spiced apple pie. A cinnamon sugar crumble encases the rim and the first sip takes you to that delicious homely apple pie. The taste concoctions of cocktails is wonderful. Needing a slight pick me up, I opted for the espresso and walnut liqueur martini, perfect start to the day.

Our first lot of canapés arrive on a two tier serving plate where the similarities to high tea ends with creamy celeriac custard tarts sprinkled with root vegetable salsa; sourdough crostini with trout tartare and caviar; warm ricotta and parmesan cheeseball and tomato jam.

Substantial canapés means no sandwich triangles but a milk roll of poached chicken smoked mozzarella and garlic aioli. A sweet quinoa salad with grapes, baby spinach & mint, and an amazing croque monsieur of smoked leg ham, caramelised fennel and pecorino bechamel. Channeling Oliver Twist, I wanted to ask for some more please?

The last round of sweet canapés are served on a wooden serving board. That means lemon curd tartlets with burnt meringue, raspberry jelly with a rich vanilla marshmallow accompanied by bits of delicious candied coconut and bite sized coconut chocolate cups with salted caramel and chocolate crispies are all fair game.

Service is eager and catering for dietary restrictions is especially easy with a vegetarian and gluten free options. High tea at the Food Society is an elegant affair with decent conversation or at the very least til juicy gossip arises.

Food Society, hidden as it is on the lower ground level of 91 Riley Street is worth seeking out. Bookings are essential. Check out their website and book a date with your gal pals.
